Some Wu members, like Cappadonna, are overly concerned with the way they dress, while others are a plain ol' inebriated mess (read: Ol' Dirty Bastard). For the GZA, it's all about the lyrics. With his nasal delivery and rapid-fire flow, he is the most experienced and oldest member of the Wu Tang Clan (he released a pre-Wu LP on Cold Chillin' Records entitled Words from the Genius in 1991). GZA's forte is battle rhymes (on his self-titled cut he declares that wack MCs' "lyrics are weak, like clock radio speakers"). On "Labels" he eloquently pens a complete song using only rap record label names. Loaded wordplay aside, beat-wise Liquid Swords is fully and exceptionally RZA-produced (peep the electric guitars and spacey synths on "Investigative Reports"). I decided to purchase a special edition of one of my favorite albums, the Chess Box. This includes a complete chess set, along with the chessboard imprinted on the bottom of the box. Both the original album (with the bonus track) and instrumentals-only CD are included here. I can personally confirm that these are both, indeed, remastered audio compared to the original CD that I still have.

For hip-hop fans growing up in the 20th century, Liquid Swords needs no introduction. It's simply a perfect match between raw lyrical muscle by GZA and dynamic production courtesy of RZA. The Chess Box set properly celebrates this amazing collection of tracks and its impact. Likewise, if you're willing to shell out, I recommend this edition for fans of the album, and even those who've never heard it.

Almost feels like 36 Chambers Pt. 2 and thats good

GZA dropped something with this album that is very rare. It grabs you emotionally, you feel the intensity of the lyrics in your bones, and RZA's beats set an atmosphere that sucks you into the record. I've got nothing bad to say about the album; GZA is really one of the most intelligent MC's out there and sounds like a poetic guru the way he pours his rhymes out on this.

- Most of the Clan guest on different songs on this and they for the most part deliver some of their best moments ever. Ol Dirty even appears here and does wonders for the song he guests on. If there was ever a sequel to the original "Enter the 36 Chambers", I'd have to say that "Liquid Swords" reminds me the most of it and in some ways even improves on the original formula.

- This album is extremely intense and makes you think. It may have movie samples and talk about the streets but the GZA goes intellectual with his lyrics and has a way of getting you to hang on his every word. With RZA being paired with GZA in one way or another this entire album, it's apparent that GZA brings out a side of RZA that I'd like to hear more. "B.I.B.L.E.", the last song on the album, is amazing in the sense that it makes a lot of valid points without losing flow or power and raises some questions that needed some awareness.

Point is: If you own a couple Wu-Tang albums and don't know where to go from where you're at, go here and you'll love this.

Everybody who's a fan of Wu-Tang knows what I'm talking about already most likely.

This is an album every rap fan should own in my opinion. Buy it.

This is just an awesome set. It contains a whole bunch of things. First, there are two records containing the album. Then there are another two of the instrumental versions. Next, there is a booklet with great artwork and all the lyrics. Additionally, the box contains some stickers. To top it all off, the whole thing is a functioning chess set with a chess board both in the box itself and on the booklet. A set of wooden chess pieces is included.

As for the quality of the packaging, it is great. The box has a magnetic latch. The vinyl in heavy also. This would be a great set for any album, but this album is especially excellent. If you aren't familiar with this album, you need to hear it right away. Every time I introduce one of my friends to it, they listen to it for a week or two at a time. A hard-hitting, influential, hip-hop masterpiece. RZAs beats peppered with GZAs rhymes stand out as one of the best combinations of that era. This box set can also be found on CD if that is more your speed. I highly recommend getting this limited edition version while you still can.

Five-mic Wu Album Starring GZA

I'm like Maya Angelou when it comes to Liquid Swords: thirteen tracks, and they are all my favorite. I listened to the album last night with the intention of writing a review on here today. Continuous play with no undesirable tracks to skip, no filler. Like any Wu record of that era--some of the martial arts film sound clips attached to the top or end of songs can seem long or non sequitur. Slow on the uptake, I learned from Wikipedia that "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth" is a backronym of "bible".

As great as this record is, and all its acclamation considered, I take issue with this being regarded unofficially as a GZA/Genius solo album. Nearly every cut but the title song is dominated by one other member or another from Wu-Tang Clan (e.g., Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest). This is no more a GZA album than "Winter Warz" is a Ghostface Killah single. Liquid Swords is a Killa Bee in Genius clothing. Although it's definitely an upgrade from the poppy Father M.C. style "Words From The Genius" debut, I regard Beneath The Surface [Explicit] instead as GZA's sophomore solo record.

Nonetheless, I highly recommend this album to those who satiate with lyrical content over smooth, rough beats. I welcome new listeners to hip-hop music. Dig for this record as a study and take from it a history lesson of the art form.

The album itself gets 5 stars. No wonder it is the most acclaimed solo Wu-Tang project. The RZA produces the whole album (minus the B.I.B.L.E. track) and it features multiple appearances from other members of the group. Every feature is nice. With this special edition release you get the original album and a second CD containing all the instrumentals except B.I.B.L.E. Although some of the tracks still have the spoken intros, most of the tracks are what you would expect.

The box that it comes in also serves as a mini chess board on the inside. The game pieces are adequately efficient if you actually plan on using them. They are about 1 inch in height and have felt bases. If you were planning on using the game board as a display piece, it might only look decent on a small coffee table if anything.

In my opinion, this is worth purchasing for the instrumentals alone. Great release that even the slightest Wu-Tang fan would appreciate.
