I'm a professional artist and my main form of art is multi-layered stencils on canvas with spray paint. Generally I use Rustoleum 2X Paint and Primer satin spray paints, but they can be hard to track down if there's no Home Depot handy. I tried Liquitex because I had great coupons for Michael's and they have an absolutely dizzying array of colors not to be found under the Rustoleum brand. My thoughts:
CON: EXPENSIVE! I'm used to $3.85/can for my regular stuff. Average store price is about $12. $7 with a good coup.
PRO: GORGEOUS selection of colors. They are vivid, intensely pigmented and true to the display. When I do pieces using Liquitex, I always get comments on the amazing color.
CON: You have to prime your surface first to get the best coverage and, even then, you often need several coats. It DOES get there in the end though!
PRO: You can buy new nozzles, including specialty ones (fat/skinny lines etc). They're pretty cheap at Michael's, especially if you have a coupon,
CON: The nozzles are total piecers. They clog like CRAZY and the spray on the standard caps is really pretty weak. It comes out at about 50% velocity of regular spray paint, which is what I'm used to.
PRO: Matches Liquitex acrylic paints exactly
CON: (For any stencil artists out there) This stuff curls my stencils like whoa. I generally use 80lb cardstock for my stencils and can get 7+ paintings out of each one. When I use Liquitex, I'm lucky to get 3 out of them. Something in it causes the edges to curl and pucker, which makes it nearly impossible to get the edges into good contact with the canvas. For this reason I try to limit its use to background colors and not shading.
PRO: They have a perfect TARDIS blue :)
BOTTOM LINE: Beautiful colors, great coverage (if you're patient), but warps stencils. I'll be staying with Rustoleum for 90% of my stenciling, but they make for amazing backdrops in my art
I then went back to Michaels, and had to press the button, wait and wait, and finally go look for someone to open up the cage where they have the precious Liquitex locked up. The also lock up the $4.99 packages of nozzles. I asked the employee why they locked up a $4.99 item, she shrugged.
This time, the nozzle, worked, and I found out that the color is a complete lie. I bought Phthalocyanine Blue (Green Shade), which the top shows (in person, not on here) a beautiful metallic blue green color. The color that actually comes out of the can is BLUE, almost cobalt blue, or royal blue, and NOT metallic. It does NOT, in any way, come close to matching the color that is around the nozzle, There is no "green" in this color. Even Krylon and Rustoleum spray paint caps match the color that comes out of the can! I bought this for the COLOR.
In the last picture you can see more of a representation, on the rock, of what the color is. It is actually darker than that. In the first photo, the dark blue on the can is a reflection of the painted rock on the silver of the can. Medium-dark blue does not equal metallic blue green.
I would not recommend this paint or this company.
I hope my review hurts the company's business. I waited a long time to get this paint and got burned for 16 bucks.
