From Lisa Birnbach, the author of The Official Preppy Handbook-and designer Chip Kidd-comes a whole new take on the prep world. True prep is a contemporary look at how the old guard of natural-fiber-loving, dog-worshipping, G&T-soaked preppies adapt to the new order of things. Birnbach considers the prep attitude towards money, schools, wardrobe, work, decorating, scandal, and food and drink. She also looks at weekends, entertaining, sports, weddings, etiquette, the Internet and electronic gadgetry, political correctness, reality TV, and . . . polar fleece. And last but not least: a do-it-yourself eulogy. With more than 200 original illustrations and photographs, True Prep promises to be a whole new, old sensation. I have the Preppy Handbook and the Yuppie Handbook, both of which I adore, and True Prep is just as good. The writing style/language is exactly the same - funny, tongue in cheek, and quick-witted. Individual topics are short which makes for fast, fun reading. A must for anyone interested in (or amused by) the preppy lifestyle.

Crass. Not nearly as entertaining as I had hoped but certainly more sarcastic and petty. Really disappointed. I would never want to be Ms. Birnbach's brand of preppy. My ancestors would be horrified at the thought of such skin-deep vanity and pretentiousness.

really not as bad as people are making it out to be but nothing like the original. i'd like to see another contemporary update where lisa brings in some young preps. her publishing expertise and a fresh take would have made this book a bit better. but without comparison, an enjoyable read on the whole.

I purchased the OPH when it was published in 1980 and was transfixed by its charm, exclusivity and elitism, all things that are in current disfavor. I loved the advice on all matters in the life of a preppy. The drawings left just enough to the imagination to appeal to every reader regardless of economic background, religion or political affiliation.
Now, to True Prep. By page 20, I realized and had to admit to myself, what a disappointment this was. What happened to the charm? The social, sartorial and cultural guidance? The photographs, instead of drawings are far too real and leave no room for personal identification; its either you and not you. The type is tiny and far too much of it, do we really need to read so much detail? In OPH there was just enough suggestion in the writing that allowed one to fill in the blank(s) as needed and was polished with a slick and chic sensibility that was cool and fashionable. Overall, a sad disappointment. The writing is so different in style and content from OPH one wonders how much of it was actually written by Lisa Birnbach. An opportunity to carry on the cool preppy ethos is now lost, as a third attempt just won't do. I gave it two stars, only because of the fond memories of its predecessor.

Love this book! It’s an ideal companion book for those into the prep lifestyle and culture. It’s written in a cheeky manor, even sometimes poking fun of itself, and the stereotypes within our culture.. I’d suggest it for any of us who grew up in topsiders, Nantucket Reds, and Oxford shirts, and spent our days either in fancy day schools or aspired to goto an Ivy League, join a country club, or a yacht club... this is the book for you.

I was once marooned for several years in a Southern town dominated by the most nouveau sort of high-tech industry plunked down into a hick-town, and I unfortunately became involved in community theater with the supposedly intelligent out-of-towners who'd been in town way too long and fallen in love with their own wonderfulness. This is that. This book is the handiwork of the sort of people who think they're using Elizabethan English cleverly (commandments for preppies, and so forth) but who can't do so grammatically. Do you like things a bit flashier than in "The Official Preppy Handbook"? Are you homosexual? Are you a left-leaning prosperous person who flits from cause to cause, from hobby to hobby? Do you say "awesome" frequently? If so, this book will make you feel like you are one of THE most clever people in a small place where there isn't much to do except try to be ironic without in fact knowing what "irony" means. The original book came in the right time and in the right place. Please just let it go. The world does not need one more bad sequel.

I wore out my copy of the original Prep Handbook I bought back in 1982. I still have it. I was excited when I saw this come out. It was boring and the whole thing was just garbage. No insights...just printed and sold for money making purposes. Sad....would have loved to have had something good.

Fun take on the world of Prepdom. The more things change since the 80s bestseller, the more set in stone they still are.

This book looked intriguing and was a very interesting read. The layout of the different sections was good. The text and illustrations combined humour with facts about this American lifestyle and reminded me of the Bluffers Guides somewhat. This is a book that I would take on holiday or just dip into for a light hearted read from time to time.

Satire, kein Stylebook
Reviewed in Germany on December 25, 2010Verified Purchase

Wonderful! A great later day follow up to the original Preppy Guide (which I only read just before reading this one, True Prep). Loved them both! Excellent read for those who like amusing reading , lighthearted reading about Preppy people. Very entertaining.
