Chronic illnesses affect us emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially. They also impact our relationships, careers, and dreams. They take a toll on us. However, if we only focus on the diagnoses, medical tests, lengthy procedures, long appointments, frequent hospitalizations, unanswered questions and the worries that keep us up at night, we can easily feel defeated. This is not the case for the eighteen men and women who share their stories in this book.
Without discounting the challenges, the pain, and all the losses, the authors of Made to Overcome - Chronic Illness Edition openly share how they are finding meaning, purpose, joy, and peace despite chronic illness. The chronic illnesses that could have ended their lives have become their motivation to live. Through their health struggles, they have become resilient, more compassionate, and superheroes in their own rights. Many have founded organizations, sparked movements, and created other initiatives that are shaking up our world.
Although their stories and personalities differ, they are unified in their message. They have one hope and one goal only, and that is to remind everyone to never give up no matter what circumstances they are enduring.
No matter what cards you have been dealt in this life, no matter what illnesses you are experiencing, you are made to overcome! This message resonates through each chapter in this book, and its truth will not be silenced.
We are rising above chronic illnesses, and so can you!

Maye LaRue wrote poetry her entire life. Many collections of originals were lost throughout the years, due to floods, and other devastating events. Over a twenty year period, she was a regular contributor to “Over the Ozarks,” a column published by the Springfield News-Leader (MO). The poems in this collection were given to her adopted daughter/granddaughter Lisa LaRue with a handwritten note: “Honey, if you ever have time or get bored, could you type these for me? Maybe they’d make a good book someday.” The folder they were in was titled “For my book.”
Lisa LaRue (Baker) has published these highlights in honor of the hundredth anniversary of Maye’s birth.
