THE LIST is the story of Annie, a teenager, leaving home for college, away from her father’s misguided need for total control. She finally has freedom. Freedom to get her ears pierced, to put on makeup, dare to look at boys, and maybe even kiss for the first time. She quickly makes friends with a colorful cast of characters and with the help of her roommate she creates a list of things she must do while she’s still a teen. Now, Chris wants to be with her, which is awesome – finally guys are noticing her – but the guys she really wants, Ryan, who won’t make a move because Chris is his best friend. Ugh!
On the surface, THE LIST may seem like a fun collage age coming of age story. And it is! But frankly that’s misleading and incomplete at best. In the hands of Kate L. Mary, this novel goes deep into this cast of flawed characters, their decisions are brutally real, and their scars are still bleeding. The chemistry is blistering and the characters are so dynamic that each could have a book of their own. Finally I should point out that this book is able to pull off both sweet and steamy all at once. What? You ask. Yes, it is! In the hands of Mary, this book accomplishes just that.
Fair warning: once you start you may not be able to stop. This is a fun, fast-paced story, with heat and heart.
I highly recommend it!
Annie just wants to live her life and experience things like others. She wasn't allowed to really experience things growing up and she had her father always freaking out and her brothers didn't help much in that. She wasn't allowed to become who she was supposed to be. She feels an amazing amount of electricity and lust for Ryan but he keeps pushing her away due to Chris having feelings for her.
Ryan is a great guy who feels very protective of Cami, his cousin who has pretty much been raised as his sister. Her parents pretty much raised him. He's been best friends with Chris for a large part of his life and they are as close as brothers. He has so many feelings for Annie, who he calls Buttercup because she reminds him of those flowers. But he does his best to push her away and stop anything happening due to what Chris wants. He has a tendency to be weak and only thing of Chris wants instead of how he is treating and hurting Annie.
The List got off to a bit of a slow start but as the action started picking up I found myself a bit more interested. I liked the concept of Annie having a “to do” list of items she wanted to accomplish before she turned twenty. She had spent her entire life with a domineering father that sheltered her from the outside world due to a tragedy from their past, as well as four brothers that shared that same need to isolate her from any possible harm. I liked seeing her evolution as the book goes on. She’s looking to find herself and that’s exactly what she is accomplishing.
My biggest complaint is that there was little resolution. The big blow up at the end was left with so many strings hanging you really couldn’t walk away from the book with any sense of finality. The love triangle isn’t resolved; everyone just walks away, there is never any sort of confrontation. The book just kind of stops, and I would have loved to know what happened between Chris and Ryan. I know that Chris has his own book, but this is something that should be addressed in The List. Each book in the series is a standalone, yet it felt like a bit of a cliffhanger.
For the most part I liked the book but those few issues took it down to three stars.
