I have an MFA in Writing for Children/Young Adults from VCFA and have taught in the very same program. I play guitar (fingerpicking country blues), sing badly, and attempt to paint with watercolor. I do not like to cook and have failed at growing things.

For the love of Peter Seeger and what he meant

Having grown up on Pete Seeger songs, his political journey, and his principles, I looked forward eagerly to the publication of this book. The text and lyrics are wonderful memories and the illustrations are beautiful. Ms. Schubert has done a terrific job of plucking the strings of my memory as I heard Pete's banjo strumming the tunes. I bought three copies for each of my grown children and their families to continue the tradition of Pete Seeger in our hearts.

Powerful Picture Book Biography

As a school librarian, I absolutely love picture book biographies, and this is one that I will definitely be using for a read aloud with classes. I especially love when books have natural tie-ins with extension activities. Whether or not my students are already familiar with Seger's work, we will be able to listen to clips of his music and discuss the importance that he had on the culture of the United States - you can find a wide variety of resources on Schubert's site. Throughout the book, as it covers the timeline of Seger's career, there are song titles below each significant event or topic - this is an excellent set up for a really rich reading and listening experience, whether it be at home, in a library story time or in a music classroom. The illustrations are beautiful with soft pixelated images.

Included in the back pages of this book are an author's note, bibliography, timeline, recommended children's books and recommended recordings.

Pete Seeger aimed to make everyone feel like they were a part of something bigger

Pete Seeger was not just a musician and singer, he was intent on motivating his audience to participate, join in, be part of the movement. Whether that movement was singing along with him, marching for equal rights, appreciating the Hudson River and working towards making its water clean or creating a handbook so anyone could learn to play the banjo; Seeger was a man of action, who believed in community as the solution to many problem. The author of this literary biography cunningly inserts many of the titles of Seeger's songs into the narrative, offering the reader evidence of how through music he aimed to create awareness, celebrate, or just plain enjoy life's moments. A timeline is included at the end, as well as why the author was inspired to write this biography in the Author's Notes.

I'll admit, I have a special place in my heart for picture book biographies. I'm not sure why I love them so much, maybe it's the beautiful artwork that usually accompanies them. Or maybe it's the way the authors have to work so hard to choose just the right words to describe the person. Whatever the reason, I was happy to pick up this book about Pete Seeger. While I came after Seeger's time, I am very familiar with a lot of the songs that he brought to the world. In fact, I was amazed at how many of the songs that Schubert listed in her text I recognized.

At a time when there is so much contention and disagreement in the world, it was refreshing to read this beautiful book about someone who worked hard to bring unity and peace. Someone who used his talents to inspire people to change themselves and then change the world around them. Unlike many who like to talk about change, Seeger worked to bring about change, he really walked the talk. Schubert's text does a great job of introducing this man in a way that children can understand and appreciate. I loved the way she integrated his song titles into the text as she talked about the issues that he worked so hard for.

As for the illustrations, the minute I saw Colon's name on the book, I knew they would be gorgeous. And I was right. The soft texture of his illustrations suits the subject of the book to a tee. This is a book that I would highly recommend, not just for the historical impact that Seeger made, but for the inspiring example he could be for us today, through both his beautiful music and his focus on community.

It wasn't until I read LISTEN that I realized I knew more about Pete Seeger's music than I did him, but it is that fact which made this book even more powerful and timely.

I love that Leda Schubert was able to capture the essence of a man that has been able to touch people around the world, and show us who he was outside of the music. We're able to understand what motivated him and why his life is an example for all of us as to the impact that one person can make. Another thing that really struck me was that it also shows the importance of using our gifts for something larger than ourselves. Pete seemed to get this early on in life, and it would appear that this is something that kept him humble and focused.

Well presented and something that will whet your appetite to want to know more about the man, LISTEN instructs us to do just that when it comes to Pete Seeger: Listen to the word and listen to what he said through his life and do our best to emulate him as best we can.

Like so many people, all over the world, I have listened to Pete Seeger for my entire adult life, sang and taught his songs to my children and now am singing and teaching his songs to my grandson. He is as beloved as any songwriter and singer ever was, and his songs chronicle his and our generation's history in haunting words and unforgettable tunes. LISTEN captures Pete's gift, his charm, his magic and his courage. It's a book for our times, that's for sure. Most important, though, is that LISTEN speaks directly to small children, to young adults, and to the elders as well. Like all of Schubert's childrens books, LISTEN is completely accessible to the young, while conveying complex ideas.
Best of all, this book weaves in so many of Pete's songs with his story. It will leave you humming, tapping your feet, and determined to get Pete's own voice on whatever medium to bring his inexhaustible joy into your life and the lives of all the kids around you. Every school library, every day care. and every family needs copies of this book!
