Editorial Reviews

A prolific songwriter since her preteens, LIGHTS is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who has quickly gained major attention since taking her homemade music public. She has been declared the #1 Unsigned Artist in Canada (MySpace). She fuses electronica-based pop, rock and new wave sounds with mellifluous vocals that combine for a unique listening experience. LIGHTS continues to inspire new fans with every musical creation.

Solid first Dream/Synth Pop album from the wonderful singer-songwriter-keytarist LIGHTS (Valerie Poxleitner). Standout tracks, in my opinion, are "River," "Ice," "Second Go," "The Last Thing on Your Mind," "Face Up," "Lions!" and "Up Up and Away" (bonus iTunes track).

LIGHTS is the real deal, people. She uses various vocal tricks on the album, but I've seen her in-person live and on live video chats, and she can belt out a tune like nobody's business. She's already immensely popular in her homeland of Canada, and hopefully with this album can become a household name here in the United States. She definitely deserves it.

LIGHTS is now one of my three favorite things from Canada (the other two being the band Sloan and the fast food restaurant New York Fries).

I've downloaded many of these songs previously as EP releases and love all of them. This debut album has many new songs on it and they are all awesome. I recommend this album to anyone. She has a great voice, unique sound, and you won't be disappointed.

Other fantastic songs from Lights are: White, Drive Your Soul(one of my overall favorites), and I Owe You One.

I am not Christian, and I don't typically listen to this brand of music.

I was on Pandora listening and one of this woman's songs came on. I had never heard of her before. I like a lot of music, mostly metal however their are artists i enjoy from every genre.

She has a very pretty voice. Her song's are very emotional and enjoyable to listen to. It's clear that their are religious ideals being portrayed here, but that's ok with me. I enjoy the feeling that goes into the singing as well as her voice.

I would recommend checking it out if you like impressive vocals and heartfelt/loving lyrics. In particular I enjoy "Drive My Soul" "Second Go" and "Lions!" on this album, although a few other's stand out as well.

LIGHTS has quickly become one of my favorite artists. The first song I ever heard by her was "I Owe You One" (which unfortunately did not make it to this album) and I fell in love with the meaningful lyrics and the style of music. This album definitely did NOT disappoint me.

I should note that I purchased it back when it first came out, and that it was the first physical CD I had purchased in over 2 years. I don't regret the purchase. I still listen to this album, even 2 years after its release.

The album itself is of the synthpop genre. There is a good mix of songs. There are upbeat songs -- such as "Saviour," "Lions!" and "Face Up" -- and then there are more melancholy songs, like "Pretend" and "Drive My Soul." The songs are all well-produced, and all of them are catchy. Lights herself has a unique voice that matches well with the songs.

But for me that is not the most important part. The thing I like most about this album is that I feel like every single song comes straight from Lights' heart. Unlike most artists, Lights doesn't have to rely on thousands of different songwriters to write her songs for her. Instead she is able to pen deep, meaningful songs that everyone can relate to. If you like pop music but are tired of listening to artists who can't even put the pen to paper and write something that you can relate to, buy this album IMMEDIATELY. You will not regret it!

Standout tracks: Drive My Soul, Saviour, Face Up, Lions!, The Listening

Wow, I'm a fan! I heard of Lights from looking at song credits in an Owl City song where Adam Young used her to accompany him. I started with a few samples on Amazon, thought they were decent, but didn't go much farther. A few years later, I saw a new album released from her and thought, I should go give her another listen. Thanks to Spotify, I was able to hear her whole collection and instantly purchased her first CD (love the AutoRip feature!). I now own all three and love her music, but this first release is still my favorite, and I have to listen to the whole thing once I start, because each song ends and I think, "oh, the next one is really good"...

I discovered Lights after hearing her duet with Owl City (Cactus in the Valley). Although I'm not crazy about every track on this recording, there are some stellar standouts that I absolutely love. My #1 favorite is Drive My Soul. Could listen to that a lot without getting tired of it. Lights has kind of a mousy, little-girl voice, but you learn to overlook that when accompanited by great music arrangements and interesting lyrics. Lights is apparently a gifted, insightful artist with strong songwriting ability and I hope to hear more from her in the future!

I can't remember the last time I felt "inspired" by a musical recording. Most of the music that is meant to be inspiring just generally comes off as heavy-handed and manipulative, like it's trying too hard to wring yet more tears out of those easily moved emo types who unconsciously play with their thumb rings and cry at the drop of a hat. I find myself decidedly unmoved by musical works in most cases; I mostly just like the music I like because it sounds good - which is why this disc took me by complete surprise. Not only is this recording a lush work of electronic dreamscapes and floating melodies, but it is genuinely heartfelt, reaching out to the listener with earnestness, passion and a gentle spirit.

The word that I think best describes The Listening is revelatory, and this is essentially so because LIGHTS herself is a genuine and charismatic talent who radiates hopeful spirituality into dark spaces at the same time she sings. Further, her vocals embody femininity and are free from the outlandish staccato and other parlor trick embellishments that permeate the vocals of so many other female singers, and this gives The Listening an endearing emotional gravity that I find to be missing from a lot of recordings. Additionally, LIGHTS pens lyrics to match. She writes relatable songs that hook you with their lyrical beauty and simplicity - no pretension, no cryptic, ostentatious art house poetry, just life truths that reach you on a personal level. When you combine these strengths with some of the most catchy synth pop to be recorded recently, you get a singular musical expression that I find difficult to quantify. It's electro-pop but it's spiritual. It's ethereal and wandering but it's emotionally rich. It's light but it reaches way down in the dark.
