Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- In this revised edition of the 1961 title, a father and child take a walk together and listen to the sounds around them. The text has been streamlined and updated, and Aliki has completely replaced her previous black-and-white sketches with colorful, lively illustrations of multiethnic people in contemporary settings. The writing is concise and to the point without being choppy, and the overall effect is unhurried and relaxed. Young readers (or listeners) will enjoy the book, both as a story and as a jumping-off point for their own walks. --Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, Buffalo, NY

A Kid's Review on January 25, 2006
Format: Paperback
My name is Lizbeth. I am a third grader in Salton City, CA. This book is about a little girl that was walking and then heard noises. She paid attention to the noises. I felt fantastic about this book. I learned that when you're walking, you can hear noises. I loved the part when the little girl splashed water. She is a great girl. I hope you buy it!

When my children were preschool age, they loved this book, and it still brings fond memories and smiles five years later. There is so much entertainment value in the various sounds, like the "zoooooooooom" of the lawnmower or "trring trring" of the bicycle bell. Your children will love hearing your version of these sounds, as well as their own. My girls and I took many "listening walks," inspired by this wonderful book.

A simple idea, to listen. But we forget the magic that there is in "first times". Do you remember the first time you heard a cricket sing? Probably not, but after you read this book, it won't matter - you will feel like every time you hear a cricket, and many other sounds in your world, its your first time again.
An invaluable lesson for children growing up with MTV, the Internet, billboards, and multimedia lessons in school. This book helps you and your child to "unplug" and relax long enough to really hear the world around you.

This book has great illustrations and teaches kids to listen to the environment around them instead of always making noise. This book is more appropriate for those who live in a city. Most of the things that are listened to include buses, jack hammers, high heels on cement, and cars.... eventually they arrive at a park where they hear woodpeckers, ducks, and bees, but the nature side of things is much shorter. I wish they had included something like laughter of kids in the park playing, or a particular bark from the dog that meant something.... because kids should also pay attention to listening to others and understand those sounds reveal much about a person and their feelings. At least the quietness of her father in the walk was attributed to him thinking. I like how the book ends in asking kids to be quiet and listen to what is around them whether indoors or out. Overall, would be a good book to include in a lesson planing of the senses, especially because it could lead to a "project" of the students sitting in a particular area, being quite, and just listening for what they can hear and writing/drawing it down or sharing etc.

Back in 1985, when I was pregnant with my youngest child, and the two oldest ones where in elementary school during the day, I had time to spend with my four-year-old son. THE LISTENING WALK was one of our favorite books. We were living then on a nine-acre piece of lovely wooded property in Florida and would often take our own "listening walks" in those woods, paying attention to the sounds around us. That original copy of the book has been lost, but I wanted to revisit the theme and the experience with my grandchildren, especially the two youngest, who just turned five years old.

Buy the book, read the book with a child or children you love, and then go take your own listening walks, and do so often. In a world that is often so fast-paced and so loud, it is wonderful to practice listening.

I have enjoyed reading this book to young children as they join along in reading by making the sounds of the items outside that the little girl hears when she goes on a walk with her dad and dog. The way some of the words are printed on the pages add to the overall enjoyment of reading.

Beautiful book, love the art work by Aliki. Starts with the little girl putting on her walking shoes & walking outside with her dad and dog. Shows the difference between outdoor sounds, busy city sounds and quiet nature sounds. Am looking forward to using it at the birding center to help children listen to the sounds around them. Great for compare & contrast. At the end, she is back in her room & says, "You do not even have to take a walk to hear sounds. There are sounds everywhere all the time. All you have to do is keep still and listen". So cute!!! SO TRUE!!!

I purchased this book to teach my students to visualize. While I do think I could use it for that purpose, it would be better to teach the senses, specifically hearing. It's a cute story with lots of sound effects.
