From the Author
I encourage everyone to write lists outside of to do lists, or the bite-size packaged "listicles" we come across as clickbait (i.e."ten signs you're dying").
Auto-biographical list-making is a pathway to rediscover memories, preserve stories, kickstart creative projects, visualize dreams, and keep a record of books, films, music, and all the other experiences that have transformed you. Making a list also augments our brain's storage capacity. If it's in a list, then memories are never lost; they never fall behind the mind's filing cabinet.
If I asked you to list "memorable objects inside your childhood home," or the "places you've lived," a colorful assortment of memories would surface that are unique to you. THIS IS YOUR LISTOGRAPHY. A completed list on, let's say, "songs that remind you of loves from the past" might bring up feelings and memories in the unique way a photograph can--sometimes even more so. I can't make a list on "my favorite games from childhood" without remembering what it was like to hit the white cubes nervously out of the "Don't Break The Ice" game, or my neighbor's dad conducting "Simon Says" in the yard on the 4th of July.
While "to do" lists serve as encouragement, and propel us forward, other lists memorialize. A few weeks before I lost my mother to cancer, she said to me, "I am really going to miss eating a piece of toast." This moment has remained with me as a gift from her, like Nora Ephron's list she composed before her death on the things she "will miss" and "not miss" about being alive. Lists can also cultivate gratitude, like "things I love," "favorite things to smell," or "days I would relive again."
Many of us don't have the time to journal, or the inclination to write an autobiography, so I created my series of journals, and listography.com, to help capture all the experiences that make up a life in easy and sweetly CURATED topics. I've rediscovered many lost memories by making lists--all while creating a beautiful map of my life here on earth.
My mission is to inspire how you keep and collect your memories, all those elements of human experience--including a nice piece of toast!
Now, make some lists . . .

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016I'm kind of a list maniac, so this book is right in my wheelhouse. It's so much fun, with such a huge variety of topics that it will keep me occupied for a long time, I'm sure. Sometimes I stick with one list, and other times, I skip around from one page to another. The interesting thing is how these lists have stimulated so many forgotten memories and also provided fodder for more detailed projects. In fact, you could do a journal for each list, or write a story for each list! Or they could be art prompts or Pinterest subjects or photo organization ideas or subjects for family discussions. And the really cool thing is that you can skip any lists that you find boring or objectionable and cross out the suggested idea and replaced it with your own! I could go on and on! If you like lists, you can't go wrong with this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2021I got this on a whim, and I'm glad I did. This is great if you are a list-er like I am. It's been fun writing down my answers for each prompt. I will be ordering others in this series. Some really make you think!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021The quality of the book is really good. Every page has an illustration and one list. The prompts are not that many but they’re good and creative. The media could not be loaded.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2016I purchased, in total, three of these as gifts for Christmas. At first I wanted just a journal for my father-in-law who had been having trouble sleeping. When I went to shop for a regular, blank journal I found this. I thought it would make a better purchase for that use as you don't have to have any thoughts at all in your head to sit down and write, it has "prompts". I then came on Amazon and purchased an additional two as a gift for my husband for Christmas - I gave him two because it was intended to be a duel gift: a Christmas gift for him, and an anniversary gift to each other (we would each use a book and then gift it to each other on our anniversary.)
This is an awesome gift. I'll probably purchase more of this series as gifts in the future, they make one for just about anyone or anything.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2011This is a wonderful product and such a fun way to record your memories. I start to laugh every time I imagine myself one day reading this book to my grandchildren. This particular Listography journal covers a wide range of topics: favorite movies, songs, and foods, places you have lived, childhood and current friends, jobs you have had, and much, much more. It may take me a while to complete the entire journal, but I don't mind at all - it's a fun alternative to sitting on the sofa watching tv :)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021For those who want to keep some type of personal record, but really don't like writing boring facts. This is fun, easy and entertaining. We've used these lists to start some great conversations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2010I am a list-maker, and I tend towards autobiographic writing. I wanted a way to summarize my thoughts and history, and in that way, this book is spot on. However, there are some things to consider before purchasing this book. These reflect my personal thoughts, but I feel they are relevant to others.
Pros:
1. Many list headings, from "Favorite songs" to "Best friends" to "Places I've lived"
2. Easy format, especially for list-maker addicts
3. Lists that I hadn't considered, like "People I've lived with"
Cons:
1. Some redundancy in the lists. I mean, for me, "Favorite Songs" is very similar to "Favorite albums" and "Favorite Musicians"
2. Several of the lists are quite personal, "People you've had sex with", etc. "Weirdest places you've had sex", etc.
3. Personally, I don't like the illustrations.
Overall, I like this book, but am only giving it 3 stars as I feel it would have limited appeal to some readers. I wanted to get copies for my mother, and brother, for example, but would not feel comfortable reading their answers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2009What better way to get to know yourself than by ranking your favorites (and occasionally, LEAST favorites) in all aspects of life? From the basics---like favorite foods, books, music, etc.---to some more thought-provoking ideas---such as the top attractions in the city you live in and things you'd like to do before you die---they've even thoughtfully included some space at the back for you to come up with your own lists! Each list is paired with an amusing illustration to help get the creative juices flowing. A nice quality book with a durable soft cover. Buy one for yourself or as a great gift for friends!
Also, don't miss Love Listography, perfect to do together with your partner to get to know each other better and have a great time doing it!

Karelle RenaudReviewed in Canada on June 22, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Fun to write
A fun activity that brings you way down memory lane! I bought « The future listography » first but I came back to buy this one. While this book is about your past and your memories, the « future listography » is like a very complete bucket list. The two books make a good combo and they give you a clear portrait of your past accomplishments and your future goals. The media could not be loaded.

Already owning the parent book,
This was purchased for a friend,
She has a love of writing lists,
Of which there is no end.
This book is like a memoir,
A template for your soul,
With whimsical little pictures,
You'll soon be on a roll.

Barbara GReviewed in Italy on December 19, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Bellissimo!
