Editorial Reviews

I realize that when I played my songs acoustically it made me sing different. It brought a new light to the lyrics that I d written throughout my career, says Sammy Hagar. For the first time in his career, Sammy Hagar releases an acoustic album of some of his well-known songs. Featuring 11 tracks, Sammy is joined by longtime band guitarist of the "Waboritas," Vic Johnson, on guitar and vocals. It's very live, very personal with Vic accompanying me on guitar and singing background vocals. No overdubs...I think that my hardcore fans are really going to love it.

Sammy Hagar is a extremely talented performer. I still would love to see him and Eddie Van Halen work together again. Lite Roast is very good. It's very organic. It's very well played. Vic Johnson is an amazing guitar player. Sammy takes several songs he has recorded and does them acoustic, just him and Vic. The results are cool. Sammy songs, VH songs, all work. Trite. You might just like it.

Great acoustic effort. Why he has not done this long ago, I have no idea. An acoustic performance shows your true talent, even in the studio. Also, shows off Vic's talents. A guy that has to be a chameleon on board with Sammy, as to cover his library of material. Although there are a ton of other songs I would have loved to seen covered acoustically on here, it did shed some light on the others that I may have not been so fond of in their original form. Probably for a more true Sammy fan, which obviously, I am. Great effort.

From the opening guitar lick to the last "turn yourself around and get back home" this album is fantastic start to finish! Having the Sammy Hagar show on album when he played an acoustic show in Boston about 10-15 years ago, this matches that hands down! Great selection of tunes from all the Sammy Hagar era's. Favorite songs on the album (they are all killer btw) Dreams, One Sip, The Love, Who has The Right?.

A masterpiece album!

A treat for Hagar fans of all eras, this show of talent features the Red Rocker challenging himself and Vic Johnson to lay bare a slice of Sammy's vast catalog. The result is an exhibition of raw vocals, impressive finger work, and a display of the collaboration these two musicians have built up over the years.

Sharing the credits for the album, Vic Johnson demonstrates his worthiness to own a significant piece of the Hagar legacy. An accomplished guitarist in his own right, Vic bears the mantle of covering Ronnie Montrose, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani and others as his regular day job. It's great to hear him have a chance to put his own creativity at the forefront of this album.

The track list alone represents an impressive winnowing down of a 40+ year target rich environment. My one knock (costing a star), is that there are parts of the list that are a bit too safe. For example, acoustic releases already exist for Eagles Fly and Dreams. Recorded versions of One Sip, Finish What You Started, Father Sun, Sailin', and the second release of Halfway to Memphis were mostly acoustic already. While these versions are indeed stripped down with no discernable overdubs, they are all still pretty close to previously released versions.

Now this is probably a complaint that only someone with a complete Sammy collection might lodge, but that's probably also the biggest audience for this album.

For me, the real treats were The Love, Who Has the Right, Deeper Kind of Love (which he did for his solo on his last VH tour). I also did enjoy what is now the third treatment of Halfway to Memphis, this one adding accordion and very subtle percussion.

I was so impressed with this "Lite" rendition of classic tunes from the Red Rocker! The album showed a side of the Rocker that lies beneath. I was so impressed with the rendition of "Where Eagles Fly", it brought tears to my eyes. Loved "Red Voodoo". Good choices for acoustic tunes. Victor was the perfect partner to Sammy's voice. Can't wait for the sequel!! Redheads Rule!!

This album provides a new twist on old Sammy Hagar and Van Halen songs. The arrangements are stripped down to Sammy, Vic, and their acoustic guitars. Their arrangement of Dreams by VH has made it into Sammy's live set and is truly a highlight of this set. Fans of Hagar and VH will want to buy this album asap.

A bland mishmash of solo and VH, would like to hear more of Sammy in the mix the vocals sound bland an altogether boring CD will probably spend the rest of it's life on a shelf somewhere in the house.

A nice change of tempo on some classic Red Rocker material. But, it does get me to wonder if he does NOT have the spirit to do a solid solo rock album. LOVE CHICKENFOOT and the material they do. Sammy's last work had him doing "Country", that bothers me in a Big Time Way!!! Get us Rocking Red Rocker!!!
