Noisy, but operates as expected

Noise when disk is spinning is louder than my processor fan. However, it operates as I expect. Eventually, these types of drives will go the way of the old 3.25" drives. I've only needed it to install the operating system and productivity applications. Unless Microsoft releases an Xbox emulator that I can play my games on this computer, I really do not use this CD/DVD drive.

Ok, for my purposes, to play the sims 3 and burn the occasional dvd, this drive was fine. it's write time was great since I never burn at full speed anyway. I found myself using my laptop to burn more out of habit than anything so I wouldn't say it was over used.

One day after having just played my new sims 3 university game, it just stoped working. I open it up thinking maybe the cord had come loose, no dice. Closer inspection yielded that ozone smell that comes when electronic burn out. I was scared that something else might be effected but after a thorough check none of the four hard drives are behaving oddly and two of them are 5+ years old.I thought maybe the molex-to-sata conversion cord was the problem so after unhooking the hard drives just in case i hooked it directly to a sata power connector on the psu (There are only four, hence the converter)still nothing.

So, I'm throwing it out and buying a different brand.

*Update*
Although it took four emails over a couple of weeks and retyping the same thing over and over again, Lite-On allowed me to send them the old drive and they replaced it. It works now and though it is dubious as to how long it will last I will upgrade my initial 2 star review to a 4 star one. They still lose a star for the quick burn out but I've tried replacement with a different brand drive before and that was much more complicated and frustrating so I commend them on straight forward customer service.

I had to rebuild one of our computers as after a storm it wouldn't come back on... go figure since it was shut down properly. From there I had replaced most of the internals and everything was working except the DVD-RW drive was being picky--- it would work when it felt like it. I looked at the date and it was from 2006. For that I felt it served its time and I had no qualms in replacing it. Since we really do not use it except when I need to do repairs to the system or load program software that is on disc--- I was not willing to break the bank on a replacement. This one also replaced a IDE drive so no more ribbon cable which was nice as it was always a bugger to fold in the case.

The only hiccup was in my system configuration. It would persist that the device was not working properly and would not recognize it properly. After a little searching I found out that in Windows 7's registry there were a possibility of four entries that could prevent this from working---- I had one of the four, deleted it, rebooted the system and Voila! it was up and running.

I do not fault the drive as it was my computer/ other drive that started the whole problem. This one is definitely faster, quieter, and for the price.... it can't be beat for a DVD-RW drive. On our other computer where I do use the drive quite a bit I am tempted to replace it with one of these as well since I can also ditch the IDE cable.

Update 12/2012-- I just setup a new machine and bought another one of these drives. It once again worked very well and installed without a hitch. I have one piece of software that is very particular to install--- for some reason the original disc is hit or miss, but the copy that I made works perfectly. I gave the original a shot and it failed with the install, switched over to the copy and all was fine. Since that has been my only snafu and it has tricked up several other systems/ drives as well, it doesn't bother me at all. I still recommend it and may be in for a third if our one other drive gets to be picky in opening.... needless to say this is a new behavior!
