Another reviewer mentioned a problem with the hanger coming off. It's about coat hanger thickness and spring tension holds it into holes in the case, so you'd have to bend it too far for it to be loose. You do have to be careful that it goes through the holes in both the lid and the glass case.
I have had trouble with the plastic on either side of the positive contact sticking out too far causing the battery not to touch. First I put a wad of aluminum foil inbetween, then a permanent solution -- a blob of solder on the contact.
Finally this light is beautiful! There is the cracked glass which is interesting to look at. While the glass is white, it has a multi-colored glaze on it that is pretty both day and night.
** Update 6/12 **
I was mistaken about the hanger coming off -- it is the _glass_ that can come off. I'd given one to my father-in-law for Christmas and mounted it on a patio post where it got full sun all day. In April the caulk holding on the glass ball came loose. Fortunately it was over a rain barrel with water in it, so the ball didn't break. I cleaned off the caulk and thought about glues I could use to hold it on better. But really silicone caulk _should_ be more resistant to environment than anything. So after sanding both the glass and plastic, I reattached with clear caulk.
In another unit I got recently, the silicone waterproofing the wires going to the solar panel was so thick that the battery wouldn't fit. I had to pull and cut most of it off.
So for those flaws and the positive battery connector being too narrow for some batteries, I've dropped my rating to four stars. It's still an attractive piece but build quality varies.
It's a clear and iridescent glass dome with white mortar mosaic. The LED lights inside of the lantern are blue, not the lantern itself. The battery and solar charger are held onto the lantern by the wire handle. I ordered two of these and one of them fell apart and cracked on the ground when the handle came apart, so be advised they aren't super sturdy.
The company is great as well. One of my green ones malfunctioned outside of the return window but the company is exchanging my light anyway! Thanks!
There are some sharp edges in the glass (if you've never made anything like this in crafting class, it's broken windshield glass chips affixed to a glass bowl, and then "grouted" between, but some of the glass pieces stick up kind of high above the grout). Several folks said not to pick it up by the loop, but I do all the time (nightly, I use it when I go shut the chickens up at dusk)--we just don't leave it hanging on the loop for any period of time, and I can report no problems so far.
The box it's packed in indicates that it may change color, but ours does not (we did not want it to), it's a soft cool white light, and the glass is tinted much like you see in the picture, bluish and irridesces to a light purplish.
Hubby likes it so much that he thought we could get several to put on the table and that they'd be "bright enough to eat by;" alas, they are currently shown as out of stock :(
