This 1974 monograph is Out of print in 2012 because in 1975 Robert Kysar gave a dismissive review, so this non-academic scholar was ignored. 30 years later Kysar retracted his opposition, but too late to gain interest. Even the other great 1970's source-critics of John failed to learn anything from Teeple, and no advances have been made in 40 years. Such a great scholar comes along only once in a generation, but we missed our chance to solve the provenance of John. His work just needed some attention from the other scholars of the era.
Teeple (like Freed, Nicol, and Fortna) derived a source text in the Gospel of John from passages that had style similar to the Synoptics. However, he also found a special style for the Discourses that must be another source. Teeple's greatest contribution was using the newly available papyri to identify anarthrous editorial passages that uniformly failed to position an article before nouns. He could thereby separate the two source strata (above) from a later redactional strand, because the arthrous redactions stood out from the anarthous Editor's insertions into the arthrous sources. My recent attempt to update Teeple is here:

(Last I saw, there were two copies of Teeple's book at the Cal State Sacramento Library, maybe the extra one could be purchased for another library. Considering California's budget crisis, maybe both could be obtained. I'm not giving up my copy.)
