The actual important center coax wire is indeed 100% copper.
The 95% shielding, which is the braiding that surrounds 95% of the inner coax, is actually copper plated/clad aluminum. The fact that the shielding has multiple strands makes it ideal for completing the signal connection and protecting the solid inner copper line, and is why it is called shielding.
The two power lines (Black and Red) are copper plated strands (7 strands in each).
I gave this five stars, because I feel this manufacturer took the best of both worlds. As current electrical current and data flows on the outside of whatever it is traveling on, having braided and/or stranded wiring, which means multiple contact points, is an economical way to have your cake and eat it too, as you won't have significant, if any loss of the integrity of low speed signals/data that you generally find in DVR security systems. On the other hand, like Romex or RG59 coax, it is, IMO, far more important to have solid copper when using a single line (think of heat and resistance or as another example, dielectrics with copper and steel plumbing. I am not a total expert, but I hope this was understandable. I saved $100 buying this as opposed to another spool that had 100% copper on everything. Remember, although you need grounding to make the connection, the all important signal/data only travels down the solid copper middle line of the coax.Read more ›
