The liner is one long tube of plastic instead of series of bags like I imagined. I thought it was was going to be like the produce bags you use at the grocery store that are attached end to end. Every time you empty the bin, you need to cut the tube and tie a new knot to seal off the bottom of plastic tube. This feels a lot less sanitary than using bags because to tie the knot you're handling an open end of a plastic tube that you've been shoveling dirty litter through for the last week. 100% of the litter bits don't fall all the way to the bottom, so inevitably some delicious crumbs fall out when you cut the tube and go to tie a new knot.
Considering that manufacturer knows the depth of the Litter Genie, it should have been easy for them to make appropriately sized "produce style" bags instead of the plastic tube design they opted for. The only possible advantage to the tube style that I can see is that it's probably cheaper for them to manufacture. Speaking of costs, depending on how much of a bulk discount you get, the refills appear to cost between 6 and 8 dollars a piece. One refill is 14 ft tubing. I measured about 14 inches per "bag", but let's make the math easy and say I only used one foot. That would mean you get about 14 "bags" out of a refill. At $6 per refill, that works out to $0.42 per "bag." I just searched for "small trash bags" on amazon and found 100 bags for $11.45, or about $0.11 per bag. They're also bigger than your hand tied Litter Genie "bags."
My final complaint is the size of the opening that you're supposed to shovel litter into. It's barely bigger the provided scoop, which is fine, except that means that litter crumbs will invariably settle around the rim of the opening unless you're scooping litter with the precision of a surgeon. This is a problem because when you have to replace the liner (with poorly designed and overpriced liner refills), you need to depress a plastic tab ON THE RIM OF THE POOP SHOOT OPENING. Yeah, the same rim you shovel dirty litter through that by now has most certainly collected a healthy dusting of stray litter crumbs. I think we can agree that's a bad design, but maybe it's not so terrible when you consider that you only have to deal with it when swapping out liner cartridges. What's undeniably awful is the fact that the litter also ends up on the trap door handle -- the handle that you have to use every time you clean the litter box.
Overall, I think the design of this product is laughably bad. The fact that I was able to laugh at how poorly this product was designed might be its only redeeming feature. I'll use up the remaining poop tube just to get some value out of this thing, but I don't plan on buying a refill and I don't recommend you buy this product.
This is easy to use, and really does trap the smell. It's easy to empty when the bag gets full. The most difficult part is changing the refill bags. There is a tab that needs to be pushed away from you to unlock the area the refill container goes into. I recommend using a small pocket knife or pocket screwdriver to make it easier. Once that tab is unlocked and the top is opened, the rest is easy.
I've been very impressed with the cutter on the inside. I have owned one litter genie for at least 2 years now (bought a second one a few months ago) and the cutter still works extremely well! I was worried it would dull after years of use, but it has not at all.
I HIGHLY recommend a litter genie for daily litter box cleaning. It will keep you and you kitties happy!!

Here are the things I don't like:
1. the bags are not compostable and the replacement bags are expensive
2. when you scoop, you make a litter trail to the bin; so you have to have it close to the litter box
3. the scoop is too fat and it removes way too much litter when scooping; I kept using the one I already had.
This is what I did to fix the issue of the bags. I bought compostable bags from Amazon and inserted it into the bin over the expensive bags it comes with. When its full I just remove the compostable bag and leave the manufactures bag in place. I bought 150 compostable bags for $20 and its much better for the environment. Make sure you get bags that are LONG enough. The ones I bought are 4 gallon ASIN B07TF7D292
Hope this helps!
Some people complain about the high cost of refills. The refill that came with the unit lasted me exactly two months for my two fast growing kittens. I let the bags fill completely before changing them. You can decide the cost by searching for the refills and using my experience as a guide.
