Often, first books in a series, suffer from first in a series syndrome, as in the author provides information dumps on everyone, overwhelming the reader. That is not the case with this story. The story flows well, the focus is where it should be, and tidbits of information is provided about side characters leaving a reader, me, wanting more.
I love a good BDSM story. A Little Band Of Red is Lily Freeman's debut novel. It is also the first book in the Red Series. You won't get a happily ever after out of this book as the story continues in Fire In The Blood I really loved PJ from the beginning. I admired her courage to leave it all behind and start over. Talked into checking out a bondage club by the only female friend she's made, India, PJ is reluctant because she has no desire to be whipped and caned. She's not into pain. Luke on the other hand is. He loves to deliver pain but after so many years is looking for something different. He's ready for the emotional connection. While at first I was ok with Luke, I can honestly say by the end of the book I was not a fan. He crossed a line that I as a reader don't know if I can get past. This book is also filled with a lot of secondary characters and you have to pay attention or your lost. The book switches from one characters thoughts to the next with no real indication your switching. These two thing prevented me from giving the book five stars.
I'm on to book two, Fire In the Blood and we shall see if James can redeem himself. If you like BDSM books you will probably really like this book. Just be forewarned your head is going to swimming in many characters before your through.
What she finds? A new old apartment, new neighbours, new friends and an opportunity to remake herself as a part of something she had only ever acknowledged in her deepest fantasies.
Over dealing with her work and ex-fiance issues in New Zealand, PJ’s seemingly crazy plan to move to London seems to be working for her. She’s gaining confidence in herself and becoming the independent woman she always thought she should be. She makes some new friends, and starts up a somewhat unexpected relationship with Luke (a Master from a BDSM club she joins with her new best friend India). In getting together with Luke, PJ discovers that perhaps she still has a little way further to go before her new personal growth is finished.
A lot of sass and a little in your face, don’t expect anything but the blunt truth from this woman. Introduced through an acquaintance, PJ and India immediately hit it off. India invites trouble by asking PJ to join an exclusive BDSM club with her; kick starting a new sex life to go along with everything else. Indy is a godsend to PJ and quickly fills her available best friend and sounding board slot. There’s a saying that comes to mind when I think of these two – ‘All for one and one for all.’ No one gets left behind.
There are enough hints here of a story between India and another master from the club, Trey to tantalise and make you beg for her story as well.
Mika and Elliot
Mika is very sexy, good looking, Italian and charming. Oh and gay, dammit. This man is impossible not to love, he only ever shows affection and concern for PJ and she responds to him immediately. He makes a great part of her new support net and flirts with PJ constantly.
Elliot on the other hand, extremely tall, arrogant, intimidating and gorgeous to boot, is a mass of contradictions. He goes from being cold with PJ to showing concern and protectiveness, back to cold again. He also seems to find it impossible not to interfere in PJ’s life – especially after he meets Luke, who, it seems, he knows from the past.
I love these two both as characters and as a couple, the small breaks in the main story shown through Elliot’s point of view, fleshes them out and allows you to get to know them better. I can’t wait to see what their fascination and interference in PJ’s life will led to, especially as they grow closer and become her confidantes.
An experienced Master and hardcore sadist, Luke is very disillusioned with the life he’s built for himself and is ready to pack it all in. He is very conflicted between what he wants and what he thinks is even possible at his stage of the game, when he meets PJ and is convinced she is everything he’s been waiting for. After a disastrous misunderstanding where he almost loses PJ before they’ve even begun, he sets out to make her believe it too.
'He understood that she was overwhelmed by everything she’d heard tonight, by him, but they had connected in that room and he’d fight for that chance again, just not with clever words and seductive arguments like he usually did, tonight all he had left was—him.’
Luke quietly steals your heart with his romantic inclinations and he definitely surprises PJ:
“His hands moved to her face, one cupped her jaw while the other swept her hair away with a tenderness that had her staring up at him. He was not what she had expected tonight.”
But we must not forget that for all that he is saying he doesn’t need pain from her, it seems to be hard wired into his brain.
“Don’t be scared, there’s nothing to be scared of. I just want to show you what you’re capable of, what we can have together if you’ll trust me. Can you do that?”
Ultimately, that’s what it comes down to – can she trust him? Or is she making a big mistake?
The almost, could have been perfect Master if only things had worked out differently, Adam exudes sex appeal like you wouldn’t believe. He is younger and less jaded competition for Luke and gives every sign of being PJ’s dream man. Frankly, I think he’d be anybody’s dream man.
“I am responsible for your pleasure—“His fingers flexed, tilting her head back till their lips almost touched. The first delicious bite of tension sizzled through her scalp. “And your pain.”
Unfortunately, while due to Luke’s machinations, PJ and Adam aren’t meant to be, I think Adam is there to contrast the perfection of what could have been, the if only, with the somewhat disconcerting relationship she starts up with Luke. Certainly, you are left hoping when their chance to be together passes that PJ will get what she is looking for when she ends up in Luke’s arms. If nothing else, I want the author to write Adam’s own story at some point because his character is screaming out for it – he’s the sort of character who raises the temperature just by walking on to the page.
I can’t write this review without mentioning the dog. He is a rather pivotal character, either directly or indirectly influencing key elements of the main plot and has a lot to do with the emotional undercurrents throughout the book.
He is the last piece remaining to fill PJ’s new life and he heals the last crack in her heart with his unconditional love and acceptance.
His injuries from when she finds him as a stray bring PJ and Luke back together after their first scene at the club when she would otherwise have stayed away and he also bridges the gap between herself and Elliot by humanising him with his affection for Vader, allowing PJ to see the front he puts on for the world for what it is.
There is so much to like about this book: hot off the scale sex scenes which are wonderfully written and give you everything you could ask for and more – the pent up tension alone is unbelievable, great characters who are real enough to make you want to hear their own stories, and enough emotion and romance to keep everyone happy.
While this is undeniably an erotic book, with a definite edge – especially with the BDSM aspects which are pushed a lot harder than your average bondage kink fest, it is also a romance and it is nice to see that just as much effort has been put into the emotional as has been put into the physical. The writing style is easy to read, and keeps you interested, the sex hot, fresh, inventive and will definitely exercise your imagination. I loved this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Bring it on Ms Freeman.

I'm so in love with this story!! As someone that's proudly from the BDSM scene I find it hard to come across a story that I can relate to.Read more
