Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) was born in Paris and aspired at an early age to be a writer. An influential artist and thinker, she wrote primarily fiction until 1964, when her last novel, Collages, was published. She wrote The House of Incest, a prose-poem (1936), three novellas collected in The Winter of Artifice (1939), short stories collected in Under a Glass Bell (1944), and a five-volume continuous novel consisting of Ladders to Fire (1946), Children of the Albatross (1947), The Four-Chambered Heart (1950), A Spy in the House of Love (1954), and Seduction of the Minotaur (1961). These novels were collected as Cities of the Interior (1974). She gained commercial and critical success with the publication of the first volume of her diary (1966); to date, fifteen diary volumes have been published. Her most commercially successful books were her erotica published as Delta of Venus (1977) and Little Birds (1979). Today, her books are appearing digitally, most notably with the anthology The Portable Anais Nin (2011).

Anais Nin Captures the Imagination...Whether You Want Her To or Not

I don't remember how but I found this book when I was a child. I read it then, mesmerized by Nin's colorful imagery and vague stories. What I missed at the time, due to my age, was the earthy and outright sexuality in this book. I missed the kinkiness (Nin can be quite kinky) because I did not understand those references. We were a family of readers and my parents did not examine my reading choices so I was never censored, Hallelujah! By the time I was in my teens, I was "getting" it. As an adult, I "get" it even more. & with no apologies, I have to say that I love this book. I love all the stories; I love the way it holds my attention after all this time; I love its twisted, lusty characters, and I love the way it makes me feel. I love Anais Nin and would have loved to have met her. She enriches my life.

The title story is a little bizzare, and I am sure in these hyper-phobic times, many are put-off by it. However, the remainder of the stories in this collection are quite enjoyable and well-written. They have a memoir quality about them, even though only a few are written in first person. None could be called pornographic, although all are erotic. This is one of those books in which the words unspoken speak louder than the words spoken. A sensitive and sympathetic reading of these stories reveals insights into the mysteries of women and their sexuality.

Much preferred over "The Delta of Venus". The title story is more amusing and thought provoking than erotic, but by the third story, my goodness.

Of what I enjoyed most about this volume of Nin's work, the erotica and languid style took a back seat. "Little Birds" real value for me was what an excellent historical document it is. "Hilda and Rango" really speaks to how far western society has come in how it regards feminine sexuality- whereas "A Model" illustrates quite clearly how much has not changed with gender inequity, and the rights of working women.

I highly recommend this book, and moreover recommend this Author to any person wishing to explore their own sensuality.

Also- much more erotic than RedTube.

It was... Well, it was.
The book gives an insight into what eroticism looked back in the day, and some lines are truly beautiful, some descriptions were worth highlighting.
But literally everyone in this book is sick lol Like, nothing of it is healthy, and while I am fine with things being problematic, problematic after problematic felt like too much.

After 50 Shades, I researched to try to find some decent erotic literature because 50 definitely was not it. I downloaded several books or stories but they all feel cliche and over the top, using the same dull or exaggerated language. The same stories, the same stupid plots or themes, it all just seems cheap.
Then came Anais Nin. The first story left me laughing in glee. While the first story, "Little Birds" was not, in my opinion, erotic literature... hang in there, it gets much more erotic! "Little Birds" just demonstrated solid and interesting writing. These stories are not your typical erotic lit. They twist and turn and suck you in and leave you wanting more. Brilliant! Highly recommend!

Useful historical source of erotic literature. Nin is said to be one of the first women writers of erotica. She wrote these stories on contract for a customer who craved "more sex; less poetry." In comparison to today's outpourings in this genre, the language is conservative; however, the plotlines routinely violate Amazon's supposed prohibitions against incest, underage sex, and the like. When you take a close look at it, it's pretty wild stuff.

詩とかロマンスの要素は省いて、直截なポルノグラフィを頼まれたようだが、
それでも現在からみれば礼儀正しい清潔なポルノである。

　匿名で書いたと言うが、ヘンリー・ミラーのこと、実際はアナイス・ニンが
書くことを老人に教えていたはずだ。老人は、才色兼備の女性の秘密の情事を
盗み見るような気持ちで、あるいは美女にポルノを書かせるという鬱屈した
よろこびでこれらの小説を読んだと想像する。

　1940年ころの作品（パリやニューヨークが舞台）だが戦争の暗い影なんか
まったく感じられない。小説に登場する女性はたいてい若いモデルさん。
ニンはモデル、ダンサー、精神分析（占い）で生活費を稼いでいたから自分の
生い立ちや経験が反映されている。当時はいまと違ってモデルは街娼以下と
見なされ上流階級から軽蔑される職業だったことがよくわかる。

　翻訳者は矢川澄子。澁澤龍彦の最初の妻である。（澁澤訳『Ｏ嬢の物語』の
下訳は矢川澄子だと言われている。）
この本が出版されるころには縊死されている。この本のなかには「砂丘の女」と
いう短編がある。縛り首の公開処刑を見ている群集の性的興奮を描いたものだが、
この部分を翻訳しているときに、数年後に自分も首をくくることになると
