Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The Little Butterfly That Could: "Will elicit plenty of giggles, and sly pictorial details will keep a broad range of readers happy during rereads." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for The Very Impatient Caterpillar: "Will delight fans of Mo Willems's 'Pigeon' series... absolutely charming." -- School Library Journal * "A good choice for read aloud[s]... There's definitely some science lurking here among the laughs, and preschool and primary classrooms can jumpstart the life cycle units with this super-charged title." -- The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review "Burach chronicles this miracle of nature in cartoon scenes as loud as the rapid patter... It won't be just adults chuckling at the interactions between the title character and its patiently pupating companions." -- Kirkus Reviews "Burach's mixed-media digital artwork makes good use of the cartoon style to depict vibrantly colored caterpillars and the protagonist's overwrought emotions. Particularly humorous are the spot drawings showing the inside of the chrysalis, in which he rails against the measured pace of nature... a good choice for science edutainment." -- BooklistPraise for Truck Full of Ducks: "Burach will have readers quacking up, both with the frequent repetition of the title -- 'Did you call for a truck full of ducks?' is a funny line no matter how often it's read or heard -- and over the illustrations... Sight gags and side comments in the pictures add further yuks to this ducky delight." -- Booklist "Children will delight in the extreme silliness of this story and will repeatedly pore over the detailed, colorful, and quirky illustrations." -- School Library Journal "Burach tells his story entirely through dialogue, packing it -- and his exuberant, crayon-like digital illustrations -- with visual jokes [and] an abundance of funny details to discover in each scene." -- Publishers Weekly "Silly details decorate every spread... Storytime audiences will quack up." -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for Billy Bloo Is Stuck in Goo, illustrated by Ross Burach: 2018 CBC Children's Choice Book Awards Finalist "Begs to be read aloud... Gleeful, errant nonsense." -- Kirkus Reviews "Plenty to linger (and laugh) over." -- Publishers Weekly "Lots of giggles and goo, and weird characters too, in this rhyming cumulative storytime read-aloud, make this title a must-have for picture book collections." -- School Library Journal

The butterfly that couldn't without help from a whale

The butterfly that couldn't without help from a whale
The little butterfly that could attracted me by the very animated butterfly on the cover, it was both colorful and full of expression and clearly had something to say. At first, I thought that maybe he was having issues on understanding how to fly due to the rapid movement of his legs, arms wings on the cover, all the while with his mouth agape. Clearly not a streamlined or ergonomic posture a cross country jaunt.By the second page I was more concerned that he must have overslept on moving day like a poor insect version of Kevin McAllister, which turned out to be the case. He was so overwhelmed by missing his kaleidoscope of butterfly buddies that he questions a whale as to their whereabouts, and we all know that whales suffer from very poor vision. His main problem seems to be an acute lack of confidence in his flight ability as he quickly learns that his friends are 200 miles away. Butterfly recants his life story to the whale who offers a tissue to his new friend, but the bigger question is where do whales keep dry tissues? Do they have waterproof zipper pockets? Mistakenly the whale offers up advice that he sometimes gets butterflies in his belly, and no sooner than that the weary traveler moves in and acts like he is riding an uber. In a weird maneuver the whale evicts a pleading butterfly and urges him windward and to keep trying no matter the distance. Our cheerleading whale is so helpful to his new friend I think the book should be more about the whale’s example of support versus the butterfly’s story of overcoming his inner dialogue of apprehension and doubt. In the end our intrepid insect arrives at the wintering location of the butterflies proclaiming his confidence to travel a million miles more, but that is a story for after the dormant period (if he sets an alarm this time). I liked the story, if only for the colorful and articulate poses of the butterfly telling his story, he was mostly a sarcastic over-sleeper and not really intriguing. I would love to hear more about the helpful whale and why he was so nice to travelers in need of a confidence boost.

This might not be the most educational book on butterflies, but it's a great read to get kids laughing. If you like to animate your voice and really get into character, this is a book you need. I read it to 3 six year olds and they were laughing hysterically.
