“The sharp-edged bright blue chassis, lemon-yellow dumper and smiling grill of this hard-working construction vehicle with his cohort of fuel trucks, vans, buses, pickups on heavy stock paper would have made this title a winner in my book. Wait and that's not all! The text that can be sung to the nursery favorite, "I'm a little teapot!" Try it!” ―NickJr.com
“Preschoolers will love this book.” ―School Library Journal
“The titular little dump truck cheerily gives the youngest listeners the lowdown on its duties.” ―Kirkus Reviews

"I'm a little dump truck
parking in the road,
dumping out my load."
This is the perfect little story in rhyme for your little truck lover. You'll fall in love with Hard Hat Pete! This is one of those great little, rhythmical stories that doesn't miss a beat and is a joy to read. The vehicles in this book all have those wide-eyes that give them that "I'm just going to want you to read me again and again" message to preschoolers. One nice thing about this book is that with the heavy duty binding and thick pages it's not going to be a problem when little hands turn these pages over and over again looking at the pictures. The end papers have numerous trucks to visit with. This one will be a BIG hit with your truck lover!
The bold, cheerful illustrations and rhyming text show and describe the daily life of a charming blue and yellow dump truck run by Hard Hat Pete.
Speaking of rhyming, every two pages has four lines, with rhyming words at the end of the second and fourth line, making each page it's own stanza and the whole book a poem. This is one of the more charming and less irritating children's books to attempt this style of writing, and I think it helps a lot that the content is kept relatively simple (with the exception of words like "excavator") and the sentences all use active tense and lively verbs. You can just as easily read it in a sing-song manner as you can full sentences without the emphasis on the rhyme.
I think this book is best suited for young children; I can imagine my son losing interest after preschool, due to the rhyming and illustrations, but who knows, it may be a classic for the duration of his childhood.
Overall, five stars plus. Highly recommended.
