Toddler-PreS—Following her wonderful Los pollitos/Little Chickies, Jaramillo returns with a beautiful adaptation of another well-loved traditional song for children. This accordion-style interactive board book features the nursery song in Spanish on one side and its English translation on the other. As an elephant balances on the web of a spider and finds the web holds strong, it invites another elephant to join in. The cumulative song goes up to five elephants balancing on the web in this sweetly illustrated book. The English translation changes the original lyrics somewhat to fit the tune, but the spirit of the song remains the same. Both versions have identical layouts and illustrations, and thanks to the concertina format, neither language takes precedence over the other. The cartoon-style elephants are appropriately gray and stand out against a white background, with the spider's thread going across the page (the spider makes an occasional appearance), and the lyrics are simply and clearly displayed, accompanied by their corresponding number in a different color. The work has sturdy, turn-the-wheel effects that will send the elephants' heads and trunks swaying, much to the delight of little hands. And the spider's web? Well, of course it will break in the end! VERDICT Perfect for bilingual storytime programs and any bookshelf.—Lucia Acosta, Children's Literature Specialist, NJ
“Good for the younger set as a story time addition. It would also be a good choice for those families with bilingual members as well as a way to introduce Spanish at an early age.” — Jennifer Ritter, educator
"Adorable children's book with a great rhythm!" —Kirsten Jett, Pen and Muse
"Families and teachers looking for bilingual books (English/Spanish), have a new resource in Canticos from Susie Jaramillo. Their unique presentation sets them apart from others...the Canticos books are put together with an accordion fold that lets you read through the story in one language, then flip it and read back through in the other language. There are also interactive elements like flaps to peek beneath and wheels to spin. The text and illustrations form a recipe for fun and educational books for young readers.” —Suzanne Costner, Librarian, Fairview Elementary

I wasn't a fan that some of the elephants inside are not glued the best, and a few fell off within a couple days. But, nothing a little glue won't fix.
Susie Jaramillo's Elefantitos is a bilingual counting board book based on the folk song "Elefantitos." It is in English and then in Spanish, with brightly colored numbers and elephants balancing on a spider's thread. The board book has little tabs to make the elephants move; unfortunately, I had the digital version to look at with my children and couldn't make the display change.
There isn't any indication of how the song should be sung, which would be more problematic for those of us that didn't grow up learning it. It's still a cute little poem for young children, especially if they like elephants.
This a a cute little board book that could be used to help engage your child in counting to five with its simple and repetitive prose. It also has the added bonus of having the same exact story on the opposite side in Spanish language. Early exposure to different languages has been proven to encourage quick learning for our children. I read both stories to my children, multiple times by their request. Even though they didn't understand the Spanish words, they listened intently and asked questions afterward. They responded with giggles to the pictures on the elephants on the spider’s web and the break of the web at the end of the story. This book is short but sweet! Great for younger children with short attention spans!!!
This book was given to me in an e-book version by NetGalley, Encantos, Authorbuzz, and Susie Jaramillo herself in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to read your work! (4 out of 5 stars)
The charming illustrations and rhythmic song are a wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers to stimulate a child’s cognitive and social development through the fun of singing and counting together in their native tongue, while simultaneously offering the multiple benefits of exposure to another language.
In short: It’s cute, it’s developmentally stimulating, and it’s fun!
If given the chance to read it over and over, as most parents do with good children's books, I am sure I would pick up the language. Probably far after my child learns.

Singing is a creative, relaxed, natural way to learn,... I myself have used this way to learn Spanish.Read more
