Editorial Reviews
Review
“Ward’s skillful weaving of horror and mystery forms a dense, rich tapestry....The play of imagery is as engrossing as the plot twists, making this a rewarding outing from any angle. Horror fans won’t want to miss this.” ―Publishers Weekly, STARRED review
"Ward is back with a proven winner ... disquieting, atmospheric ... impossible to look away." ―Booklist, STARRED review
"Little Eve is the sort of book that will both surprise and shock you...It’s delightful and disturbing by turns, and almost impossible to put down once you’ve started." ―Paste Magazine
“As elegant and strange as it is dark and complex. …One of Ward’s best books, and that’s saying a lot. …[I]t’s a book every lover of dark fiction should read.”―Locus Magazine
“Told in dual timelines, Little Eve is a deliciously spooky book, with prose like whispers on the wind. This one is for fans of cult stories (like me) and the gothic (also me), with dynamic characters and intense pseudo-religious psychology.” ―Tor.com
“Haunting, stunning, Little Eve offers a grand tension to shatter the world. Ward is consistently brilliant, and her deft hand once more guides us into humanity's deepest shadows. Atmospheric and unforgettable.” ―Hailey Piper, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Queen of Teeth
“A wonderful literary gothic tale.” ―Sarah Pinborough, New York Times bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes
“A smart and moving examination of self delusion and the lengths people go to to keep faith.” ―Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies
“A sublime, utterly compelling tale which grabbed me by the lapels and wouldn't let go.” ―Irenosen Okojie
“Brilliantly plotted, wonderfully well written and full of surprises.” ―Andrew Cowan, author of Pig and Worthless Men
“Little Eve brims with dark energy, full of haunting, surprising turns. You will be guessing and gasping till the end.” ―Philip Womack

Little Eve begins with the discovery of a brutal, ritualistic murder on a Scottish isle during WWII. The woman who discovers the bodies and the woman who supposedly murdered them serve as our two narrators for the rest of the story. Their tales flash back to WWI when they were both children on the isle. As the narrative progresses, we notice the conflicting accounts of what happened. One of them is lying.
Unfortunately, Little Eve didn’t work as well for me as the previously mentioned titles. It has her trademark intentional confusion that makes you feel like the dumb kid in class at times until it all clicks…if it all clicks. There’s no harm in closing a book and then running to Google for an explanation of what the hell just happened. (I did.) I found it to be overly complex even though the writing was crisp.
I do appreciate the gothic horror elements that the publishers used to market the book, but it falls more into the folk horror sub-genre than traditional gothic. I also admire Ward once again writing unapologetically when it comes to what people dub “trigger warnings.” She celebrates the genre by not shying away from the nasty.
Having said all that, I was still let down by the book as a whole. I can only recommend it to people with a much better attention span and memory than myself. I got lost in her literary labyrinth several times, but unlike her previous books, I didn’t care to find my way out. Luckily, I hear her new novel, Looking Glass Sound, is getting rave reviews and promises to be one of her darkest yet.

One thing this author does extremely well is keeping the reader in the dark as the plot twists and turns. In this book it's no different, and although I did figure out one of the main twists, there was much more I was left to discover by the end.
I really can't wait to read her next book!
I usually have trouble picturing people and settings in my mind, and so I usually skip over long descriptive paragraphs that don’t advance the story, but this author does a wonderful job of describing the landscape and environment while weaving it into the story. And I finally had an image in my mind!

If you like stories about cults read this, if you enjoy descriptive prose read this, if you enjoy gothic literature read this, if the wildness of the natural world enthrals you read this, if words are the seeds of your imagination plant this book in your brain. This is so rich and beautiful, such evocative and exquisite storytelling.
It is a haunting and claustrophobic tale of delusion, a dark labyrinth with unexpected turns and a chilling atmosphere of fear and paranoia throughout. It is so good.
Go into it blind, the synopsis is enough. This book is enchanting and devastating, I cannot wait to read it again. This goes straight into my best reads this year, 5 stars
