Editorial Reviews
Review
There are writers who have the gift of immediately engaging their readers with the sure knowledge that what will follow will be unlike anything else they've read. Jules Archer is one such writer. In Little Feasts, we are invited to a table overflowing with bold, sometimes bizarre, often tender, and deliciously original stories. This work is reminiscent of Miranda July with a dash of Aimee Bender, but make no mistake, it's 100% Jules Archer, a writer of rare verve, compassion, and wit. Indulge, lucky readers!
--Kathy Fish, author of Together We Can Bury It & Wild Life
Jules Archer is a master storyteller of hidden desires and dark dreams. In Little Feasts, she pulls the reader into the wholly human tales of cannibals and killers, liars and queens. These stories are made to be devoured, but they are devourers too. These are stories to get lost in. These are stories to be found in. They will grab you and remind you: This is what it is to want.
--Cathy Ulrich, author of Ghosts of You
Fragility, anxiety, and vulnerability are all so freshly flushed out into the open in Jules Archer's full collection of stories, Little Feasts. With strong word choices that build into rhythmic, brilliant sentences and paragraphs, this collection is resilient and has a defiant strength within each moment. Each story is spring-loaded and ready for trouble! Hope you anticipate an extravaganza--you'll feel so satiated while tasting this main course, you'll want to keep reading for dessert!

I can't pick a favorite story, they're all so wonderful. In "Prettier Things" a woman watches her mysterious neighbor and the blondes who enter his home, but never leave. In "Skillet," the title item makes quick work of awful or abusive partners. "Anne Boleyn Could Drink You Under the Table" features the reincarnated English queen's new life and search for revenge. "Far Away from Everywhere" concerns an apocalypse cult, and in "Garbage Girl," a girl's period serves as a warning.
Each story in this collection is delectable, often both bitter and sweet. I'm officially a fan of Archer and will eat up anything she writes.
I muck around at song-writing, and I often find inspiration in poetry and short fiction. Sometimes I will find a single line from a novel, but mostly that inspiration comes from very short pieces that may require a bit of interpretation. That interpretation is where the songs come from. That happened with this book. No this has nothing to do with my review, but it does have something to do with why I liked it so much. It shook something loose. I had a tune in my head this morning, I played a bit. Then, I sat down to write this review and this book married itself to my tune to create something.
Demain Publishing coined the term "short sharp shocks" and has published a healthy collection of short novelettes under that name. I am going to borrow from Demain, that's a perfect description for this book.
There is of course a multitude of themes here, but they are dark and different and just flat out original. A "lie tree", a girl that feels she isn't good enough to become what no one would want to become, a different kind of voyeurism, a patriarch shattering family heirloom, a girl who simply can't get enough to eat, a big '65 Chevy Impala and so much more. So much more.
Yes, yes, yes. There is definitely horror stuff here. Depression, suicide, serial killers, murder. It's all here, served in quick bite-sized little feasts.
I will highlight some of my favorites.
Hard To Carry And Fit In A Trunk - Ginny isn't a skinny girl. She wants to be, she wants to be slender so she is easier to abduct.
The Lie Tree - A father sends his kids out to a specific tree to tell their lies. "Daddy said that lies always clung. Stained your skin like they stained this here tree."
Prettier Things - a woman admires her neigbor mowing the grass.
Skillet - a family heirloom that protects the women of the family.
Cheap Tanya - very short, 2 pages, I loved the 2nd paragraph, a lot of the song came from this story.
Everlasting Full - a girl who can't get full marries a chef, I only wish this one hadn't given so much away with the first line.
Backseat Blues - mama and depression and that '65 Impala
We Will Set Anything On Fire - LOVED the final line "Your voice is a match begging for fire."
It was thought-provoking reading fun and much like the girl that couldn't be filled, I am left starving for more.

I am a sucker for good opening lines and this book has a great one. Then the story of Catherine, a woman who continues to mourn her dead husband. Each story highlighted a female character that might not be likable and turns them into these strong women. “An Ice Cream Cone” and “Cyber Soup” are perfect examples of these women becoming strong.
My only complaint is that the book was too short. I might have to re-visit this one again next Thanksgiving. Everyone should pick up a copy of “Little Feasts.”
