I first read this back in the 70's. It was amazing then and it is amazing now. The characters are original, and the story is just as important today as when he wrote the book. Take an old explorer looking for sunstones and a young native of a newly explored planet, combine with a multi-planet mega-corporation, and you have a plan for disaster. When a corporate controlled scientist kills one of these small creatures, all hell breaks loose. Piper wrote three books in this series, all published after he committed suicide. 3 other authors have published sequels since then.

All though the author wrote in what today is an old fashioned style and tone, it is still one of my favorites. The Heroes are heroic, intelligent, and optimistic, and succeed in the end. The Villains are either totally evil or see the errors of their ways and become heroes. This is something not seen today with current writers showing us a more neutral or down right pessimistic characters. This might be more realistic but not nearly as much fun

H. Beam Piper's output of science fiction includes three highly successful series, and two well-beloved novels: "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen (Kalvan series) and "Little Fuzzy." Piper himself, however, believed he was a failure; he committed suicide barely 14 years into his writing career.

"Little Fuzzy" is the tale of an endearing creature encountered on a mining planet by Jack Holloway, a somewhat reclusive sunstone miner. Holloway recognises the intelligence of this little guy, especially when he happens to slow down a recording of the "Yeek!" noises that Little Fuzzy makes. That's how Holloway discovers there are discrete words in that high-pitched yeek—and "Pappy Jack" sets out to learn Fuzzy speech, as Little Fuzzy begins to learn English.

Navy emergency rations (ST3) are a big hit with Little Fuzzy, so much that he brings a few fuzzy friends to get them from Pappy Jack. All the Fuzzies want "shoddabag" (shoulder-bags made from old cartridge cases) and "esteefee" (the "wonderful food," as they refer to the Navy rat-bars.)

When more new Fuzzies show up with a wealth of sunstones to store in their new shoddabags, Holloway has a mystery to solve. Are the Fuzzies thieves? Even if they are, are they competent enough to be charged uder the law? Holloway's investigation pits him squarely against Victor Grego's Zarathustra Sunstone Mining Company, which has a monopoly charter to buy sunstones on the planet.

This is a great science fiction novel with thought provoking ideas about encountering an alien race that seems more like an animal or cute pet. The size of the aliens distracts us from the facts of their intelligence. They are indeed wiser than us, and gentler than us. It is the start of a great classic sci-fi series.

The planet of Zarathustra sleeps quietly, the outright possession of the Chartered Zarathustra Company. However, something is about to wake it up. When Jack Holloway, a lone prospector out in the bush discovers a small humanoid race that might just be sapient, the company trembles. The company’s claim to the planet is based on its classification as a Class III uninhabited planet, and the company is too big to be threatened with impunity.

But, the first of the little humanoids (Fuzzies) discovered knows nothing about charters and the law. Little Fuzzy joins Pappy Jack, and discovers a whole new world, a world full of fun and adventure. These are the adventures of Little Fuzzy, and his turning upside-down of a whole world!

This book was originally published in 1962, but is every bit as good today as it was back then. The story starts out a bit slow, but it picks up speed, and by the end you find that you can’t put it down! H. Beam Piper was an author whose suicide tragically cut short what would have been a full and brilliant career. If you like good science fiction, set in a realistic and believable milieu, then I highly recommend this book to you.

I read this book every 5 years or so, it was my first H.Beam Piper story and tells a wonderful tale of a new people, found in the wilderness, there are more stories that follow this and are just as good and entertaining.I read this again (#7) as there is now more to the story being written by a new different author. H.B.Piper always meant to continue the Fuzzy stories past where they left off when he died much to early and I am going back to start them over then finish with the new ones. I don't like the picture of lemurs on the cover, see Fuzzy Sapiens cover for an idea of what Fuzzy's look like that picture is what drew me to the story back when I was 7or8
