I had the pleasure of interviewing Barbara Ann & Victor Mojica on my podcast earlier this year.

History was always my favorite subject in school and these books brought back fond memories of places here in the US that I've visited. I was also reminded of places that need to go back on my must-visit list, especially Sequoia National Park.

Each book is comprised of a tour with Little Miss History and includes many unique facts. The Illustrations (created by Victor) found in the book are amazing.

The entire book series is a perfect addition to any home, library, or school classroom. After the interview, I immediately ordered copies of a number of the books for my nieces to share with their young children, and hopefully, spark a desire to travel and learn a little bit of history.

Every time I read one of these books, I learn something new. Miss Mojica does a fantastic job of researching information for her stories. I look forward to reading more, and I am passing these books on to my great-nephews, who would thoroughly enjoy them.

Upon opening the book I thought it had high potential. After turning to the page, which purposely describe John Muir as a draft dodger, I was thoroughly disappointed. I thought this book was telling a story of the magnificent Sequoia tree, not the author’s personal, political view points! This is supposed to be a children’s book! The fact that John Muir went to Canada around the start of the Civil War has no place in the story. It only confuses the young readers. John Muir has done so much for this country, such as establishing National Park system and working with Theodore Roosevelt to establish national parks. This country would not be the same if it wasn’t for John Muir’s forethought and dedication to conserving these beautiful, natural places! Author- tell your story, keep it simple remember who your audience is.

In general the book is good, but I took two points off because the author uses the book to indoctrinate children. In 32 pages describing the Sequoia National Park, the author designates one page to describe how John Muir (lobbyist for Sequoia NP) deserts to Canada to avoid being drafted to fight in the American Civil War, presenting the US as an oppressor of the great J. Muir (father of National Parks). What has this to do with Sequoia NP?

Only one reason - a libral teacher, an America hater, uses the book to pass her hate to children.

I glued the pages about Muir, and explained to my kids that the pages were about a deserter. This is not fair to John Muir who was a nobble man, most likely regretting his behavior when still being young and a Scottish citizen, but he is exploited by the author of the book.

I visited the Sequoia National Park a couple of times as a child, so this book brought be fond memories like the tree with a section cut out to drive through. I enjoyed seeing how tiny the main character was next to the huge trees. It's really an amazing experience to experience that in person. I wasn't aware of the pollution problem or some of the interesting history references, so nice job layering in plenty of learning. The book ends with a call to action to think of ways to reduce pollution and leaves the reader wanting more by hinting at the next adventure.

I would have liked to see the main character open her mouth or smile, in order to warm up to her. Overall, I thought this was educational, fun to read and interesting to look at. I was given a free copy of the book to write an honest independent review.

My kids and I really enjoyed this book. It is very informative and fascinating. My kids wanted to read it over and over again. They have seen the sequoias in person so they were even more captivated by the book. The illustrations are wonderful and clever. I highly recommend this book!
