Upon trying to open the package, swearing came about. Ugh, ridiculously difficult packaging. I understand the need for the item to stay secure and theft proof, but come on. I have seen other packaging much more user friendly for expensive electronic items. If you are giving this as a gift, and are sure the person you are giving it to it going to keep it, I would suggest freeing the items, at least somewhat, from their constraints so whomever is getting this as a gift can enjoy it, instead of having to take 20 minutes to unpackage it.
After finally letting the bird free, you can see he has three modes: off, test mode, and on. The buttons on his chest seem to only work for test mode, and are what can be touched through the package to see how he works before taking the box apart. He has several apparatuses to utilize: a swing, perch (which can be removed for carrying,) another perch in front of a mirror, a food bowl, and a cart, which is like a mining cart. Each apparatus makes the bird do something different. He doesn't have to be connected to an apparatus to work. He does stand on a flat surface on his own and will talk. He doesn't walk, he remains stationary.
Perch: you can carry the bird around on the perch and he will repeat things you say. He makes a little tweet noise so you know to say something and he will then repeat it back. I like that the sound is his "own voice." It doesn't sound like YOU when he says it back. He will also tell you to ask him a question and he says random things back, kind of like a Magic 8 Ball.
Food: he will bend down to eat and drink, but he will not bend all the way to the bowls. He makes smacking noises while he munches, and will even burp and pass gas. Which, of course, my kids think is hilarious.
Cart: he will push the handle up and down and roll across the floor.
Perch in front of mirror: he will play music and dance. He will also dance to music you play. We played "It's Raining Men" and he told us the tune was awesome. No accounting for his musical taste.
Swing: he sings, says silly things by mixing up words, tells you he loves your smile, etc. He seems most active on the swing.
No matter where he is, he will keep talking and asking to go to different areas of his "cage" (this does not come with an actual cage.) He tells you to ask a question from other places than just the perch and will give you an answer even if you don't ask him anything. His head moves back and forth a lot, his beak moves when he talks, and his wings go up and down, though not very far.
I have not gotten him to remember anything I say, and I thought that was something he is supposed to do, but it would appear not. He will immediately repeat what you say, but he hasn't repeated anything at a later time. If he is in on mode, but just sitting and not directly being played with, he will talk for awhile, get quiet, and then randomly say things. Just now he told me my friends are cool. Well, thanks, Clever Keet, what a nice thing to say. :) He does completely stop talking after a period of time, which is good, because he could get very annoying if someone forgets to turn him off.
My kids, and my mom, really like this bird, and my mom wants one for herself. Ha! While it is cute, and I have listed what he says and does, here are some of the things we, mainly I, don't like about the toy:
Packaging is a nightmare, as already stated
I think the electronics of the toy are loud and take away from the realism, when realism is the intent of the toy
The mirror is very easily scratched
The bird is difficult to snap onto his different components, and a child may need adult help to do so
He doesn't perch on your finger, which would lend much more realism to the product
I would give him three and a half stars, but everyone here likes him quite a bit, so four stars for Clever Keet. While you're right, Keet, my friends are awesome, you're pretty awesome yourself, Blue Head, (this is what he has been coined around our house.)
