Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Some 30 issues before he would leave Little Lulu, Stanley was getting a tad verbose. Dialogue balloons frequently take up 40 percent of a panel, and when a narrative is running up above, as when Lulu’s spinning a Witch Hazel-Little Itch yarn for Alvin, it’s sometimes a wonder that there’s still plenty of picture. Besides the stories with Tubby in the spotlight, others starring Alvin now appear, including a wordless three-pager that exploits Alvin’s preschool status to serve up an endearing helping of toddler humor seldom seen in the normal Lulu continuum. (Elsewhere, of course, when Alvin speaks—watch out!) --Ray Olson

"Little Lulu: The Big Dipper Club and Other Stories"
Written and illustrated by John Stanley
(Dark Horse, 2010)
----------------------------------------------------------------
One of the best-crafted humor comic strips of the 1950s and '60s, "Little Lulu," written and illustrated by the great John Stanley, is an undiluted joy. The gags and ideas don't vary much from issue to issue -- Lulu and her friends get into mischief in a variety of ways -- but it's the delivery that's so wonderful. Once you've got the basic premise, these comics are so much fun to read. Like Charles Schulz's "Peanuts," "Little Lulu" is a showcase for a master artist at work. Like Schulz, Stanley had a marvelously understated cartooning style -- the clarity and economy of his illustrations are half the joy of this series. Plus, Lulu and those kids are such stinkers! "Little Lulu" never shies away from the naughty, chaotic side of childhood, and that's what makes these stories so compelling, even decades later. For the last year or so, Dark Horse has upped its game and is putting these collected editions out in glorious full color. I have made a point of buying every issue: it's my most sincere hope that they will make enough money on the new color volumes that someday they'll be able to go back and reissue the first dozen-and-a-half volumes in color as well... I got them all in B&W, but I'd love to see them in color, too...

"Little Lulu" was a first-class comic strip, and this is a first-class restoration project: pick any of these books up and you will not be disappointed. I promise. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

A large collection of some of the best Little Lulu stories around. Purchased thru Amazon.com at a very resonable price. The book is in full color and this adds to the fun. My grandsons love it when I read them the stories. John Stanley the writter of Little Lulu is the best. Have purchased many exciting oversized comics from Amazon.com and have always been 100percent satisfied with my purchases.

This is Volume 22 of reprints of all Little Lulu comics (#106-111). All color, beautifully printed, and chock full of the expected hilarious adventures of Little Lulu, Tubby and their friends. Each month of the original series had timely stories for that month of the year, in the unlabled town of Peekskill, NY not far from Sleepy Hollow of Washington Irving fame.
