I've had anxiety my entire life and I'm constantly trying to find new ways to deal with it. Instead, the basic premise of this book INCREASED my anxiety with, what I see as a lot of self-blame and self-doubt. In other words, instead of further trusting myself - this book made me further doubt and blame myself for creating my own anxiety!
It's also really oddly written with a mix of endless stories about the author's personal experiences and some kind of thing she calls "Snargleblart" which, in my opinion, only served to make the book confusing and complicated.
The basic premise of this book is that, and I quote: "Everything we think looks real, but none of it is true." At one point the author states, "There's no 'headache out there" or 'past' that we're experiencing - only ever our thought-created version of one, right now in the moment."
The entire book is a repetitious version of - your anxiety is coming from your anxious thoughts that you're creating yourself so stop trusting your thoughts because they aren't true.
From the reviews apparently other people are finding helpful information here - but I just did not. And I certainly didn't find anything revolutionary.
Some readers might find what she writes about as quite threatening or difficult to take in as it challenges many popular concepts of 'how we work as human beings.' Like the moment we discover that Santa Claus isn't real. But if you can suspend judgement long enough and read the words lightly, you might be surprised to notice how what she writes about is already showing up in your own life, or how it explains some of the inconsistencies in life that we seem to take for granted like 'how come two people react so differently to the same event or situation?' Bits of your world might even start to look a little different, like family relationships, or close partners, or your children, or the boss at work, or your job.
At least that’s my experience, and the insights that Nicola’s teachings have opened up for me have had me say goodbye to 40 years of debilitating panic attacks, cope gracefully with ageing parents and dementia, move across the world to start a new life, and return to the workforce as a grey nomad, living with more joy, ease and happiness than ever before.
Can you expect the same from reading this book? Perhaps, and maybe even more… certainly for anyone who is fed up with suffering, Nicola's book offers up a different way to look at mental well-being that's well worth exploring for yourself, and could be life-changing!
I heard an interview with Nicola and became very interested in her work. What a great book - It is everything I hoped for and more. It’s beautifully written, so simple, to the point and with a great humor. Her light hearted approach to the problem of anxiety is effective and has a healing power. This is truly a life changing book.

It’s difficult to summarise her ideas, but essentially she offers no solutions (revolutionary for books about anxiety!) because she is able to explain why I now don’t believe I need to fix me! Read it on a kindle and highlight paragraphs and sentences which hit the right note with you, so you can swiftly read back the key points ... this book is proving to be a lifeline for me
However, after a few days, I started to notice some changes in my anxiety - I went out a few more times than usual and let a few of my panic attacks and anxiety just happen without fighting them. Intrigued, I read the book again a few weeks later to cement some of it and since have noticed some more quite substantial changes in my behaviour. I do still have bad days but not as many as I was having before. I began to listen to a few of the podcasts and audio when I could and they did help. I'm still learning and there is a way to go but my PND and anxiety symptoms have improved quite a bit. I am writing this review because it's been a while of feeling ok and I hope that other people will give it a go with an open mind. I have also read some of the science behind it and it does make sense it works. If this is published again would be lovely to see some examples / transcripts from the audio in the actual book as some people would rather read it and possibly a bit about the science of it (but maybe because it has worked a bit on me it doesn't need it!- who knows!). I would really recommend though. Thank you Nicola Bird - it has opened my eyes.
