This is a surprising gem of a score that I recently discovered while searching through the CD rack at my local bookstore. I knew nothing about the film but I recognized Hans Zimmer and Richard Harvey so I decided to take a chance. I've always been a fan of animated film scores and upon first listening to this I recognized the voice of the singer, Camille, as the one who performed in Pixar's "Ratatouille". I usually don't like film scores that contain a lot of vocal music but this one really started to grow on me quickly. Camille's voice and the style in which she sings the songs are quite impressive and mesmerizing. I hate math, but the song "Equation" (track 5) is probably my favorite. It has been endlessly stuck in my head for the past few days now! The song "Turnaround" (track 2) is equally just as catchy and is revisited quite often throughout the score either through vocals or just orchestration. The liner notes indicate that Hans Zimmer worked more specifically with Camille in developing the music for the songs (Camille wrote the lyrics). It's unclear on how much Zimmer and Harvey collaborated on the score but I'm guessing that most likely Harvey played a bigger role in that area. Richard Harvey is also well known as a very talented multi-instrumentalist and has played in various scores throughout his career. He also contributes as a soloist on this score playing the recorder and plucked strings. Some might recognize Richard Harvey through his 2002 score "Luther" Luther: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and some might be familiar with him as being the conductor for Zimmer's "Interstellar" score.Read more ›

I have loved the book upon which this film is based for years; to call the text life-changing in a very tangible way is not stretching the facts. Naturally, when I found out a movie was being made based on this book I had grown to love so much I was both excited and a bit trepidatious - would they be able to capture the spirit of the book, or would it be another Hollywood massacre of something that could've been so much more?

Well, about the movie I'm not sure as it has yet to be released in the United States. "The Little Prince" has been released internationally and has done very well - even breaking some box office records in France. The U.S. release has been, unexpectedly, pushed back to an unstated date, though the director has confirmed the film will be released sometime later this year; the soundtrack, however, is available now.

Upon initial listening I was impressed, and the more I listened the more impressed I became until I finally decided to purchase the entire score.

The music is written by Hans Zimmer and Richard Harvey, but my guess is that Hans Zimmer provided some of the thematic content while the main body of what we hear is the product of Richard Harvey, since this score doesn't sound much like anything Hans Zimmer typically produces.

As the story is French in origin the music bears a lot of French influences and has the touch of the wonderful noted French artist, Camille, at times throughout the score. The impressionistic touches are lovely to hear and the orchestrations are an aural treat.

There's a lot of variety here, but throughout is a consistent tone of magic, beauty, and deep feeling - much like what the book conveys to the sincere reader.

The soundtrack to "The Little Prince" is pretty good. This is another pretty good soundtrack / score from Hans Zimmer (with Richard Harvey). It is solid, well-done and decently entertaining. All (28) tracks on here are pretty good.
