Editorial Reviews

Review

"The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a different kind of mind. Tapping into the creativity of ordinary citizens is the key to every community's economic future. Sylvia Lovely shares valuable insights into this new world and encourages us to see the possible in our own communities." --Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind, A Business Week Best-Seller

About the Author

Sylvia L. Lovely serves as President of the NewCities Institute, a national nonprofit organization she launched in 2001 to help communities build social and economic vitality regardless of their size or location. She is considered one of the country's most provocative voices on the merits of leadership, personal responsibility and community engagement. Often referred to as a "five foot firecracker," Sylvia L. Lovely is a powerful speaker, motivating audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad to use their own passions to make a difference in their communities. Her optimism and ambition have taken her from modest beginnings in the hills of Appalachia to law school at the University of Kentucky to the Kentucky League of Cities, which she transformed into a national model for organizations of its kind. In addition to being a community activist and nationally-known speaker, Lovely is a prolific writer. Her enlightening commentaries appear in major market newspapers, on public radio and on television networks such as CNN and CNBC.

This is a book for our times and one every US citizen should read. In one sitting you'll remember why we still live in the greatest country on earth, and that improving the world we live in is not really as impossible as it seems. You'll learn something you probably didn't know about our history and how and why American cities and communities were formed 200 years ago in the first place. You'll learn that cities = citizens (you can't have one without the other), and that we all share a lot more of the same opinions and ideas about where we live and work than you might think. It just takes us coming together and talking and listening to each other--something that seems to happen less and less in our techno world today. Sylvia Lovely is an absolutely artful writer, telling stories along the way that will make you smile, and sometimes even laugh out loud! She tells stories from her experiences about people (everyday heroes) from cities across the US that have made wonderful changes in their communities simply by bringing people together to exchange ideas and then taking one step at a time to enact change. This is a great little book that will leave you uplifted and feeling that our country really can make needed changes... one community at a time.
