I precede my review with the warning that 1) it is definitely an adult retelling (nothing explicit, though), 2) it's rather love-at-first-sight (which does make sense for a fairy tale, but is something I tend to wince at), and 3) the Kindle version ends at 86% because there are two excerpts included at the end (disappointing for me, because it meant the story wrapped up a lot quicker than I expected.)
This isn't the first non-magical fairy tale retelling I've read, but it IS the first I've read that was set in the historical West, which is neat.
The characters themselves are pretty well-developed--Hank is my favorite, both because tortured-past bounty hunter is a trope I like, and for a scene later in the book which I won't spoil here. Rojita's quite the little firecracker, and I liked watching them tease each other throughout the book.
There isn't a lot of action, but there was enough to keep me worried for Rojita and her grandmother. I liked how the plot resolved, too (though I did guess the twist before the big reveal). Much of the story focuses on Rojita's and Hank's growing attraction to each other, which works well for a fairy tale (in a normal story, I would have thought it rather over the top, but I also don't do romance, so take that with a grain of salt.)
All in all, it's an interesting twist on the fairy tale genre and I would recommend it to adults who enjoy Westerns and fairy tales.
Red as Hank calls her for her spectacular and gorgeous red hair, and her red cloak she is wearing when he finds her in the woods running from something. He has stumbled upon this beauty all alone where no woman should be alone. She is very trusting of him at once, which he knows she shouldn't be. She asks him to escort her safely back to Everland and will pay him for it.
Hank is an ex bounty hunter who says he will do it, but knows he won't but wants to get her safely to the next town and on a train to Everland.
She is being chased by a very dangerous man who Hank knows oh so well since he once had is own chase with the man as a bounty hunter, and was shot by the dangerous El Lobo. Knowing this he has to get Red to safety.
This is a wonderful new exciting twist on this classic fairly tale that you are so pulled in from the start and want to read it from start to finish.
Everland is a wonderful and very different town in Wyoming Territory that Hank thinks all these people are strange but Red knows that are wonderful people who were misplaced elsewhere in the world.
Can an ex bounty hunter and a beautiful woman with glorious red hair and opposite personalities get along and give in to their mutual attraction to each other that is from the beginning? She is thinks she can take care of herself and has lots of determination to do so and he knows she is not all that capable and needs help before she gets into to trouble. She thinks he is so handsome and is drawn to him as he is to her but he has his plans to go to Arizona and buy some land, build a house and just retire. Any chance they can survive the what if's?
Read this book and find out about this wonderful story of love at first site and heart changing minds even if the head isn't so sure. You will love it and the people of Everland. But for the background story to Everland the town and it's misplaced people who finally find it home, start with Ella the first book in this wonderful and engaging series.
I highly recommend this book and hope you will read Ella and then Little Red and I know you will as I will want to read any new stories coming out in this series.
