My aunt had a copy of "Little Star" which I played regularly as a child-some years after this great record climbed the charts. Other than the single's flip "Getting Dizzy", I was unfamiliar with the group's other recordings until I stumbled upon this collection.Although the Elegants recorded for several other labels(including United Artists, for which they recorded "Happiness"a great record and worth looking for)their Hull Records output is to my mind their best work. Sad to say the Elegants did not scale the charts again after "Litte Star",apparently for all the standard reasons. That's too bad, because there are several songs on the compilation, notably "Little Boy Blue" that I think should have been hits, but of course were not. It would be unfair to consign the group to "one hit wonder status" because, as this compilation shows, The Best of The Elegants offers even the casual listener a cd full of delights.

The Elegants have that classic "white Doo Wop sound " that seemed to be pretty dominate towards the late fifties & early sixties .The groups' 1958 classic , " Little Star "hit it big , which it did deserve , however , " Please Believe Me " with it's heart felt lead and it's chanting back ground harmonies showed more talent . The Group did well on another APT records recording of the up-beat , "Getting Dizzy " . The bass line
opening ,in my opinion ,really makes this song happen . My personal favorites from this CD are " Get Well Soon " & " Still Waiting " , I'm a sap for a good ballad and the group knew how to croon one out . Over all , it's a good CD . I'd buy it again
,but, only if it included more cuts ; 14 sides aren't enough for
me . I guess it could be worse , what if these tunes weren't available at all , then we would all be missing out -right ?
A great group , from a great time -enjoy .

The Elegants (lead Vito Picone, baritone Carman Romano, bass James Moschella, first tenor Arthur Venosa and second tenor Frank Tardogno), all from Staten Island, New York, are among the many Doo-Wop One-Hit Wonders for their 1958 gentle adaptation of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star which they cut simply as Little Star. Earlier, when they were around 15 years old, Picone and Romano had been part of Pat Cordel & The Crescents who had one single released in 195 - Darling, Come Back b/w My Tears - with three tiny labels trying their hand at local success (Club 1011 - Michele 503 - Victory 1001). By early 1958, and now an all-male quintet (Pat Cordel was a female) they grabbed the interest of Blanche (Bea) Kaslin of Hull Records who, instantly seeing "hit" written all over Little Star, had them record it in April. Due to promotional limitations, however, she then set up a lease arrangement with ABC-Paramount who, in turn, put it out on one of their subsidiaries - Apt 25005 b/w the rocking Getting Dizzy, and in Aug-Sept it peaked at # 1 R&B (where it spent 4 weeks) and # 1 Billboard Pop Top 100.

That, unfortunately, proved to be a tough act to follow and nothing after that could again crack any of the national charts. After the follow-up Goodnight b/w Please Believe Me as Apt 25017 later in 1958, and Pay Day b/w True Love Affair as Apt 25029 early in 1959 went nowhere, they were dropped, although Kaslin tried one more time in 1960 with Little Boy Blue (Is Blue No More) b/w Get Well Soon as Hull 732 (2 other cuts, Still Waiting and Rain, Rain (Go Away) were never released).

This CD is worth every penny I paid for it. "One Hit Wonders" or not, there are some great songs on this CD. If you are a fan of music from the 1950's, this CD is for you. If you like "Group Harmony", this CD is for you. The sound quality is excellent.

I remember traveling as a teenager throughout Puerto Rico during the late 1950's, and hearing 'Little Star' blasting from the cafes and record stores in San Juan and Ponce; it was virtually a world-wide hit.
