Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a standalone and the epilogue is just the sweetest thing ever and it had me crying for a good 30 minutes and I mean ugly cry. So even though this book talked about loads of things I'm not into reading this is probably one of the best books I've ever read. I'm so glad I was given a chance to read it before it got out and discover this little gem. Thank you Madison for such a beautiful heart wrenching story!" ~ Fictional Room for Book Hos

"I was impressed with Little Things simply because it doesn't follow the usual mold. Madison Street breaks outside of the mold in the gripping story about love, friendship, and struggle." ~ Mad in Wonderland Reviews

"Let me start by saying "Little Things" was flipping fantastic! I started reading thinking oh wow what a great love story....and then boom..pow..bang....I got my socks knocked off my feet! What an emotional roller coaster ride! I was literally tapping my leg and biting my nails through the suspense!" ~ Tricia, ARC recipient

"Madison Street did a great job on her debut novel. It will make you laugh, it will make you scream and it will make you cry. I love a book that makes me cry, because that means it has touched me deeply." ~ Rosie's Book Heaven

"I mean this is book is super intense, heart-breaking, soul-breaking, romantic, dark, and beautiful.  I can honestly say that I didn't see any of this coming. I mean the plot of this book blew my damn mind." ~ Cecily's Book Review

First, take my review with a grain of salt.

I admit, I'm a very tough reader to please. It's probably the way I process things, among other factors, but overall, I liked the book once I got past the beginning.

Now for my thoughts:

Since I received a free copy in exchange for a review, it was unedited, so I'm not taking that into account in my rating at all.

I read the first 39% (where it finally "takes off" so to speak) and thought a bit of that could've been removed. I know it was to show the growing relationship, but there were also unnecessary things in there, like him having sex with his gf Melanie, dream or no dream. I just didn't think it was something that needed to be shown.

Second, these kids are in HS in the beginning and yeah, Melanie was just way too sweet. I know there are genuinely good people, but she just seemed to take it like a champ, and well, teenage girls are moody, among other things, so it just didn't ring true. She's also really nice and even through the rest of the book, and so I give kudos to Madison for keeping her consistently sugary sweet. ;0

As for Raya...she was a tough cookie, and while during some of the book she's in an untenable position...I thought the way she fought was over the top and got her into more trouble than it was worth -- and anyone who reads this book will instantly know what I'm talking about because it involves her friend. She was very upset, but she knew better, and did it anyway. I thought that was an idiotic choice for a girl who seemed really freaking smart most of the book.

Duke. Ah. Where to begin. He's a sweetie, and he really adores Raya, and I love what he does for a career, and how he goes after what he wants. He's pretty freaking cool, all around.

This is one amazing story!!! I can not believe how Madison Street made this book come alive for me, these characters.. Raya, Duke, Melanie.. I felt invested (for lack of another word) I could NOT put this book down...
Raya is a sweet, beautiful girl, who is dealt a cruddy hand when it came to the 'family' dept. she has a loving mother, she just got caught up with the wrong man. Raya's stepfather.. he is just awful!! He is THE DEVIL!!! abusive, cruel, death is too good for this horrible person! (he can not even be called a man!) do you all FEEL me when I talk about him!! ok!
here in a nut shell.... Raya is tossed around place to place she minds herself so at 18 she can leave that home and take her mother with her and leave ... they settle in another place and another new school.. however, this is different. Raya meets - HIM, Duke!!
Duke is dating , Melanie.. (she is such a darling girl.. and Duke and Melanie are perfect for each other, until 'Raya' walks in and something changes... fate!)
but not at first.... Duke and Raya become friends.. and so does Raya and Melanie.. it is truly a sweet and lovely friendship and yes, even though Raya and Duke are truly drawn to one another, they love Melanie and would not want to hurt her.... until Raya does tell Duke her secret and for once let's someone in ...
she tells him what her stepfather does to her mother and how he abuses even Raya... when Raya does not come to school for several days, Duke shows up at her home and goes to her window only to find an abused and beaten, RAya... She begs him to NOT say a word, this will only make matters worse for not only her self, but her mother.. and when she turns 18 in just a couple months she will leave ..

this book will have you go through the emotional spectrum. So many hard hitting tough issues are dealt with throughout the book that I am compelled to say a warning. If you have a weak stomach for some sad hard emotional issues such as human trafficking, abuse, prostitution than i would not read this. This tackles these issues head on and one of the lead characters is brought into this world and was even in this world. Not of her own making but she was. This helped form her. Helped build her shell and make her tough to crack.

Raya is the main female character and her life was no picnic. Her childhood made her tough but vulnerable as well. She was a tough nut to crack but she was in my thoughts vulnerable because she like all of us wants to feel love, wanted and to trust that someone is inherently good and won't hurt you. Raya goes through so much turmoil you can't help but root for a happy ending for her and I hope it is with duke.

Duke is that type of guy. They meet in high school and sparks fly. Problem duke is a stand up great guy and has a girlfriend. He is also genuine and real. He does begin to fall for Raya as well. These two deny there attraction so that they can protect themselves and their friendship. Can't deny for long though because it eats away at you.

The title for this book is apt because the book shows how slowly each little thing that happens in your life whether it be significant or not helps to shape and define us. This book is a captivating read about love, friendships and struggles in which we such hard hitting issues being looked at and we are put in the emotional washing machine. Look forward to the next book.
