Way too loud

As a pediatric audiologist, I'm very concerned about the loudness of my daughter's toys. Babys' little arms are not very long, so all of a baby's toys are near his or her ears when played with. Sometimes, I think I go a bit overboard, but when I was putting batteries in this thing and my husband yelled, "Holy c*@p that's loud" from across the room, I knew I was not out of line with this one. First of all, it came with dead batteries in it. What's the point of that? Include batteries or don't, but sending it with dead ones is almost offensive. There is a "functioning volume control" on it, but since a baby just indiscriminately pushes buttons, I doubt that if I pushed the volume button down it would stay there. I tried putting packing tape over the speaker to see if that helped, but it didn't. Not even a little. I took it to work and measured it with the sound level meter. At the standard volume (not having pushed the "up" pr "down" button), many of the sounds on this thing peaked at over 80 dBA at a typical baby sized distance of 10 inches. OSHA would almost make your baby wear hearing plugs if she were playing with this as her job. We sent it back.

too hard to understand the words

Since our son loves remote controls (anything with lights and buttons), and I want to expose him to different languages, this seemed like a great idea. In reality--not so much. First, here's what this toy does. You can select a language (English, French, or Spanish) using the "Hello", "Bonjour" and "Hola" buttons. The "?" key makes several animal noises and the "!" button makes some cartoonish sound effects. When you spin the wheel at the bottom you get one of 3 musical nursery rhymes, "what a nice day" in one of the 3 languages, or the soccer/futbol "Goooooaaaaaal". Because of the poor sound quality though, my dislikes far outweigh my likes. Likes: adjustable volume control, cute noises from the "!" button, and cute musical clips from the spinning wheel at the bottom. Dislikes: the clarity of the words spoken by the remote is borderline awful - I know my numbers in English/French/Spanish and I had a hard time understanding them - so how is this going to help a small child learn them? There is the same problem with the animal noises from the "?" button and the sentences spoken when you spin the bottom wheel. Additional dislikes: the dog sound effect is a mean growl+bark (vs. a happy bark), you can adjust the volume using the up/down key but the default setting is the loudest, and there is no "off" switch for the sound. (The Sesame Street remote control stays at the last volume setting and the sound can be turned off so baby can play with the buttons quietly.) Overall, this is a great toy concept, but poorly executed. Until they improve the sound quality, it's just another toy that makes annoying noises and lights up when you push the buttons.

We got this remote for our 6 month old daughter since she is obsessed with our remote control...she loves this one. She squeals at it and plays with it for quite sometime. I really like that it has English, Spanish and French as well as animal sounds and lights up. My only complaint is the bottom wheel part is hard to turn and she cannot do that herself yet.

I knew my one year old would love this toy so I decided to try one more time. The second remote was also not working.
