This book is a rare combination of bravery and beauty. The poems in Little Venus delineate, with harrowing precision, the experience and aftereffects of sexual abuse and family trauma. They are unflinching in their clear, clear seeing and rendering of shadow--and their telling feels vital, necessary, and healing. But the poems aren't only courageous: they are formally skillful and linguistically gorgeous. I've read the final four sonnet variations, Drysdale's "House" poems, over and over and each time they take my breath away. They move with lightning speed from straightforward, plain-spoken truth-telling to truth-telling of a different but equally important sort: that of dream, intuition, imagination--the truth of the inner life that mends and makes new. This whole book is a house capacious enough to hold the powerful history and emotions it enacts so stunningly. It shows--through its remarkable grace in the presence of acute pain--how transformation can happen, how poetry and spirit--or God, or the divine--enter our lives to "lick the sutures clean between our ghosts."

This book is remarkable in numerous ways and Drysdale is a poet to keep your eye on. Her work is stellar, deeply moving, and unrelenting. One of the things she does is push open a wide door through which the aftereffects of sexual abuse are explored.
Rarely have I seen work of this caliber and content--painful, insightful, and, most of all, brave. Her villanelle "Bullet" hits the target straight on, and I wish this poem were widely anthologized. This is not only a book worth buying, but rereading, and rereading, and...

Disclosure: Although I haven't met Carla Drysdale directly, through our work, we are now Facebook friends.

The poems in Little Venus are intense little worlds - honest and vivid, powerful and passion-filled. The passion of rage, of love, of curiosity. This collection is both a gallery and a story. Individually the poems invite careful reflection - these crystallized moments of sharp emotion and image - and taken as a collection, this slim book delivers a thought-provoking and moving narrative of feminine experience.

These poems moved me deeply. They are astounding in the depth of emotion and beautiful without a trace of sentimentality. Her poems are subtly shocking, in that they stay shocking upon being read over and over. her work deserves the most scrupulous attention
