Editorial Reviews

In 1994, The Beatles' Live At The BBC was released to worldwide acclaim - hitting number one in the U.K. and number three in the U.S. and selling more than five million copies within six weeks.

In the studios of the British Broadcasting Corporation, The Beatles performed music for a variety of radio shows. Live at the BBC presents the sound of The Beatles seizing their moment to play for the nation. Thrilled to hear these exciting recordings again, Paul McCartney said, 'There's a lot of energy and spirit. We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes.'

Between March 1962 and June 1965, no fewer than 275 unique musical performances by The Beatles were broadcast by the BBC in the U.K. The group played songs on 39 radio shows in 1963 alone. Ringo Starr said in 1994, 'You tend to forget that we were a working band. It's that mono sound. There were usually no overdubs. We were in at the count-in and that was it. I get excited listening to them.' On their busiest BBC day, 16 July 1963, The Beatles recorded 18 songs for three editions of their Pop Go The Beatles series in fewer than seven hours.

The group played 88 distinct songs in their BBC sessions - some were recorded many times; others performed just once. At the time, three national BBC stations provided all daytime radio broadcasting in the U.K. Only the Light Programme network might occasionally play a record. Most broadcast music was live music. Consequently, to promote their releases, The Beatles had to play live at the BBC. 'Everything was done instantly,' remembered George Harrison, 'But before that, we used to drive 200 miles in an old van down the M1, come into London, try and find the BBC and then set up and do the program. Then we'd probably drive back to Newcastle for a gig in the evening!'

Newly remastered for reissue, The Beatles' first Live at the BBC album sounds and looks better than ever. This collection of the group's BBC sessions mixed versions of their hits with a treasure trove of 30 songs The Beatles performed on air but never released on record in the 1960s. The compelling track list ranged from a rare performance of the little known Lennon-McCartney original 'I'll Be On My Way' to covers of classic rock 'n' roll and contemporary rhythm and blues songs. At the time of its release, Live at the BBC was hailed by Rolling Stone as 'an exhilarating portrait of a band in the process of shaping its own voice and vision.' It earned a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Historical Album.

Available for the first time on three pieces of 180 gram vinyl in a double gatefold package.

Live at the BBC was assembled by George Martin in 1994.

This will be a brief capsule review. The pressings are superb. The sound is clean and, at first blush, perfect given the age and source material. However, in comparison with the original issue from 1994, differences become evident. The 1994 version seems a tad more natural and ambient. But this comes with sonic artifacts, such as sibilance, which have been digitally removed wherever possible in this 2013 remastering. This renders this 2013 version crisper, but only in some respects. In this 2013 version, at times, say in "Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey!", Ringo's bass drum is more "there", but his snare lacks the power and snap found in the 1994 version. But shouldn't they be both present in the 2013 version? There's one possible answer, but we won't go there.

Perhaps, the best way of summing up the merits of the sound of the 2013 version might be this: The more analog you are, the more you "may" gravitate toward the 1994 version, sonic warts and all. Also, if you own the 1994 pressings, and they are in excellent shape, some thought, and further investigation, might be given before purchasing this collection, especially given the cost and the limits of the source material.

As for the music, these lads could play from the get-go and knew their influences, all of which is evident from the first second of this collection. If you've never heard this music, you'll be able to obtain a hint of the thrill and joy that captivated the world over 50 years ago.

You want both Volume One and Two on vinyl. (Especially if you can make an mp3 copy, such as with Audacity free music editing software). These are great live performances and fun studio chat. The personalities of the lads really comes through in the studio banter, so I don't think of it as filler. The audio on one or two cuts is poor. This is because BBC didn't bother to save the original master-tapes. The only available copies of some songs that were only ever recorded as live performances at BBC were recordings made by fans over the air. There are several songs here that are available nowhere else.

Frankly I'm only a moderate Beatles fan, but the quality of this vinyl album (and it's companion volume 2) is simply outstanding. Long on music and short on interviews, but with enough radio live banter to make it unique and as if your really listening. Hear the Beatles do some things that never made it to an album. In sum, an intoxicating collection for anyone who appreciates great music and the talent behind it.

I'm rebuilding my vinyl collection and this was a crazy good deal for $29.99. I've only had a chance to check out one of the three albums so far, but the sound quality is just amazing. They remastered it but kept it in original monaural state which is a huge bonus imo.
Can't wait to delve more into this amazing album.

A great vinyl album with some of the best warm music the Beatle ever performed. Good banter in studio and great covers of artists that inspired them. Great Album and I would recommend it to any collection.

I owned it when it first came out in the early 90s and had it on CD. I misplaced it after a couple of relocations but have an extensive vinyl collection. It was great to ad it to my vinyl collection. A real joy. How innocent they sounded and sheer talent.Love the mono as well
