UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW - I have listened to this CD for about two months since the original review above and have come to love it. I have changed the rating to five stars from four. The performances on this disc contain a great deal of simultaneous improvisation by Lovano and Douglas and less in the way of extended, featured solos (although there are several of these by both artists) than I had expected. When I saw this group in person about the same time that this recording was made, the music sounded chaotic at times and I found myself straining to isolate the individual contributions of Lovano and Douglas. My first reaction to this recording was the same. After several listens, my ears and mind began to adjust to the approach of this group and I was able to listen to the music on its own terms. Once I accepted that the emphasis in these performances was on the interaction between the two horns rather than their individual contributions, it all started making sense and, ironically, what each of them was doing became evident to me once I stopped trying to force myself to hear it. Sounds crazy, I guess, but this is how it went for me. A challenging listen but definitely worth the effort.
