Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at LCO are truly perfection in every aspect imaginable. As this amazing group of cream of the crop musicians continues to explore every nook and cranny of jazz, this timely tribute to the incredible music of Cuba lives up to every expectation one would have of this fine organization. I am continually amazed at the attention to detail, perfection as a group and of each individual, the harmony that excludes from this ensemble is so far above any other, you don't have to be a jazz lover to appreciate the honed talent of each musician.

Wynton Marsalis continues to do so much to bring jazz to everyone, through the numerous educational programs, outreach and study of the farthest corners of the genre. He and his ensemble are involved at every level and when you hear them play, you are witnessing extreme passion, knowledge and talent. If you ever have the chance to hear Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at LCO live, you absolutely owe it to yourself to go - it should be on everyone's bucket list!

Almost wasting virtual print to write that the individual players who are the JALC are talented but these discs are so full of terrific writing, arranging, playing and soloing that it has to be written. There is not a weak tune on either disc. Ensemble playing is on a level only a band that has been together for years can achieve. The soloing is incredible. Not to leave anyone out but listen to Marcus Printup on 2/3's Adventure or Elliot Mason on Braggin' in Brass for two examples. The intensity and drive of this band, on these discs, is as good as it gets on a recording. By the set. Crank it up (over and over again). Smile. Dance.

Nice to hear Joe Temperley one last time. We miss you Joe.

Excellent album. The arrangements, piano, drums, trumpet section (especially whoever is back there on lead). The sax section's nice, and Wynton, its hard to say anything bad about him. I can't. "We're not worthy!!" Love his blues playing. Not a spectacular range, but nice playing across changes. Nice to listen to that Monette trumpet sound. If Wynton wasn't playing on this album, it would still be recommended. The arrangements are that good. A lot of the latter tunes remind me of Duke Ellington, what he would write if still alive, muted trumpets, sax sectional work. I will hear new things in this album for months. This is nice jazz.

The music is excellent, no question. The packaging was flimsy and damaged during mailing, causing the cd cover to be damaged. The last track on the first cd has some sound problems toward the end, caused by the damage. It's not a big deal, but the flimsy mailer resulted in the disc edge damage, causing the sound problem. But this is a great cd, one of the best Marsalis and his great band have ever done.

The music is just awesome on this cd. It's very entertaining even humorous in parts. On "Baa Baa Black Sheep", various horns and instruments create a sound reminiscent of a farm yard full of what sounded like drunk sheep. It brought a smile to my face. The horn playing on this album is spectacular. Its wonderfully expressive. It elicits many different moods and emotions and is just plain fun to listen to. Of course, all of the musicians are absolutely first rate and combine seamlessly to form one organic whole. The sound is really very good as well. Final verdict: 4.25 stars for sound 4.5 for music.

Sometimes I am blindsided by the things I see on Amazon. I thought this was one of the first fruits of the new opening of U.S. towards Cuba, but find it's from about 5 years ago. Don't know much about Marsalis, or JaLC, since I saw him about 30 years ago at Orchestra Hall Minneapolis, but I can only compare this album to Dizzy Gillespie in his more Latin moods, and some of the finer Ellington sounds on other tracks. Some of the cha-cha rhythms bring on some knowing laughter from the audience - just love it love it love it.

Only a minor complaint,and that's with the odd fade out ending,I buy live discs to have the complete performance.OK,the piece may have come to a logical conclusion,but still,Idon't like fadeouts.And my other cavil is the first vocal number,can't say that for me,it added much.The second one,the blues,though.....that made up for what I considered the rather insipid singer of earlier.All in all,enjoyable.Wynton will never be Duke or Mingus,try as he may,but he's very good,within his self imposed limitations,and can really play,of that there's no doubt.There are some Young Turks of the trumpet coming up,more adventurous in their ambitions(Ambrose Akinmusale springs to mind),but yet to grasp what they seem to be reaching for,It's just a shame Wynton has a closed mind when it comes to progress,jazz is an evolving music,but he seems to be happiest mired in the past.

Esta la grabación de sus mejores momentos. Los lazos entre el jazz y y la música afro.cubana se remiten al gran Buza y su marcha a NY en los años 40. Para que nos entendamos, no es un disco de salsa, ni tan siquiera de música afro-cubana, es puro jazz. Es un doble CD inmenso donde las influencias del bep bol, de la música cibana y el sonido de New Orleans cra una magia indescriptible. Se que Marsalis es terriblemente académico pero aquí por momentos se contagia del ambiente del Teatro Mella de la Habana y surge la magia. Clásicos, temas de Winton y unos músicos increíbles crearon dos conciertos mágicos. Este es el resultado. De verdad increíble. Quizás la descripción mas acertada del evento sale de la voz de un espectador "WINTON SABROSON", y es cierto. Histórico evento que hoy al fin da la luz, La cultura une y aquí esta la muestra. Que gozada de disco!!!
