Every aging boomer has a vinyl recording with grooves worn from playing over and over. One of them must be a Beatles record that had to be replaced from constant use. One's musical tastes would allow for one or two others.
One of my favorites was Deep in the Heart of Texas by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, recorded live in Austin at the Armadillo World Headquarters which, sadly, met a wrecking ball on its way to a parking lot. I've been replacing my vinyl with CDs over the years, a project which has been somewhat expensive. Imagine my surprise to find the CD version on Amazon for LESS than I paid for the vinyl version in 1973. But would it sound as good as I remembered? Would it be as much FUN as I remembered?
This is what a live album should sound like. Not a note is wasted and every band member puts in an honest day's work. But a musician is only as good as his instrument, and a recording, vinyl or digital, is only as good as the sound technology. Happily, this CD is superior on all levels. The bass quality is particularly superb. It's almost like being there. The only thing missing is the smell. They make pot-scented candles, don't they?
The album opens with a rousing introduction followed by the boisterous Armadillo Stomp that announces we're here to blow your boots off! They follow this with a set of songs, from boogie-woogie, Texas swing, Cajun, rockabilly to straight-up rock-and-roll with Austin progressive country sensibilities. Even the stage patter is fun.
The comically mournful Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues turns the old crying-in-my-beer into an updated broken-hearted pot-smoking version:
"Well, my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone.
The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home.
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too."
Riot in Cell Block #9 by Leiber and Stoller, and Mean Woman Blues by Roy Orbison, combine rock-rollicking fun with expert musicianship. Too Much Fun, written by two band members, is a libertarian manifesto:
"Every story's got a moral and mine does too
It ain't nobody's business whatever you do
All of us got weird notions of time
The Lord only knows that I sure got mine
I'm public enemy number one
All because I wanna have too much fun."
There may be a song not to your liking - for me, Crying Time Again - but they're all worth a listen because they're performed with such spectacular verve and vigor.
There is one serious flaw in this CD. It isn't long enough.

One heck of a live show!!!
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2008
Sometime in late 1974 or early 1975 a friend recommended that my buddies and we drive to Austin to catch this band, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen. We said "Who???" My friend said, "Just go, you won't regret it."So we all went to the Armadillo World Headquarters. It was a night I'll never forget. I never enjoyed a concert as much before or since then. The next day, I promptly went out and bought "Live from Deep...." It had been recorded from a previous concert at the 'Dillo. I played the album until the grooves wore out, then bought a cassette. I played it to death, then bought the CD, when it became available. I now have it on my Ipod. Let's hear it for technology!!!This was probably the tightest live act to hit a stage.I continue to relive that fantastic concert over 30 years later.GET YOURSELF A COPY!!!!

There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.

The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).
CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.

This album has been digitally remastered from the original tapes and "may have some tape hiss". I heard no disturbing hiss, just an incredibly "warm" analog sound. The recording quality is magnificent - who said "live" recordings never match studio ones? The engineering and stereo placement puts the listener right in the center of the band. The atmosphere is electric, through the entire concert and the (live) audience appreciate every minute of it. The enthusiasm of the band and their obvious enjoyment at performing come thru in every track. It displays superb musicianship and covers many genres - you don't have to be a Country nut to enjoy it. If you've never listened to Commander Cody before this is the album to start with. All our family, aged from 70 to 14 love it.

It sounds like they spead up the speed of some of the songs compared to my old vinyl album too make it fit on the CD's time limit.

Never really listened to (or purchased) anything by the Commander, but while looking for something different, I came across this album. It is simply one of the, if not the, best live albums I've ever heard. I ain't educated enough to talk about various genres of music style, but this has them all covered in spades. If it doean't get your party moving, you better call the undertaker.
One bit of advice: DON'T LISTEN TO THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME ON HEADPHONES!!!!!! Seriously, this is one of the best albums I've eve purchased, borrowed or stole. Get it!!!

Just Plain Good Time Party Music
Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2011
Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen are/were a great live act and this is really good example of the band in concert.
The Airmen played country style music mixed with rockabilly, boogie and swing. This is just plain foot-stompin', toe tapping, good time, party music. It's the type of album you can put in the CD player during a long drive on a hot summer day and just let it rip.
Great material from a band that is often overlooked today. If you're not familiar with Commander Cody, you might want to check out another live album "Got a Live One Here" first and, if you like that one (and you will), buy this one. Both albums are worth having but "Got A Live One Here" has more tracks on it for roughly the same money.
Highly recommended if you like country-boogie-swing.

Austin TX prior to SXSW
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 19, 2013
Back in 1973 when South by Southwest existed (maybe) only in the dreams of someone the Armadillo was one smoking Austin venue where not only a band like this here was greeted by a loving crowd but also the likes of Frank Zappa. Cheered by an enthusiastic crowd the commander and his airmen play their asses off on a repertoire full of what is now called Americana but is simply a jambalaya of rock'n'roll's ingrediences. My purchase substituted a worn out vinyl so all I can say is: BUY IT! Experience a Texas Roadhouse go banana over an act that enjoys to play and entertain to the tilt. It may also hint how times were in Austin before SXSW grew too big to be fun like this here

Fun from start to finish

Since the mid-70s I have loved this album. It was the first Commander Cody album I heard and remains in many ways my favourite. Happy, straightforward truckers bar-room bluesy country mish mash, performed to perfection by a talented group at the height of their powers. The only single album from them that is as consistently good, in my opinion, is Country Casanova.
