"Nessuno qui mi troverà più / ma io sarò sempre qui attorno / proprio come le canzoni che mi son lasciato alle spalle / io ora vivrò per sempre", così Billy Joe scriveva e cantava in uno dei suoi pezzi più belli, "Live Forever", e ascoltando questo magnifico tributo, sarà proprio così, mr. Shaver. Il texano, uno dei migliori cantautori "outlaw" degli anni settanta, se n'è andato nel 2020, dopo una vita ricca di guai ma anche di grandi canzoni. Non ci è voluto molto tempo perché si organizzasse un disco tributo, tradizione americana come il barbeque. Una bella lista di nomi, amici texani e non, dodici grandi canzoni e la paura serpeggiante di trovarsi davanti all'ennesimo buon disco senza picchi particolari, come spesso capita in queste occasioni. Mi sbagliavo e mi sbagliavo di grosso: "Live Forever" è uno dei dischi dell'anno, a sorpresa, e pur non raggiungendo le vette del doppio tributo a Guy Clark, capolavoro totale, non gli si piazza molto distante. Willie Nelson (in due pezzi), Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, i prezzemolini Nathaniel Rateliff e Margo Price (ma a quanti dischi tributo hanno partecipato?), due graditi ritorni, Edie Brickell (!!) e Ryan Bingham, la coppia Shires & Isbell, il country man George Strait, l'ottima Miranda Lambert e la sopravvalutata Allison Russel, che, guarda caso, fa la cover che mi piace meno. Poi ci sono le canzoni, fenomenali, praticamente tutti i classici di Billy Joe e c'è soprattutto quella che è l'arma vincente del tributo, ovvero l'atmosfera "outlaw" degli anni settanta, nessuno esce da quei confini, nessuno fa troppo di testa sua, e il disco ne guadagna parecchio, le canzoni viaggiano altissime, i musicisti sono tutti bravissimi e l'opera, incisa fra Austin e Nashville, quasi uno stringersi la mano fra due mondi storicamente ostili, è completa. Difficile indicare una canzone piuttosto che un'altra, ma già dal primo pezzo, "Live Forever", dove troviamo Willie insieme a Lucinda Williams, è già una versione strepitosa e il livello rimane quello per quaranta minuti. Bravi tutti, finalmente un tributo che ha un senso e un cuore. Billy Joe ne sarebbe stato entusiasta, ne sono sicuro. Fra i dischi del 2022.
