Good: Small, Built in hard drive. Great video quality, HDMI, great remote, can be mapped as a network drive and used as a backup device, network connection, great audio quality, usb keyboard support (not tested by me), online services, great menus, easy to use
Cons: a big one. bugs in transfer speeds. Transfer movies and data from your pc to the WD TV Hub is easy: the WD Discover software founds the unit in your network and map the internal hard drive as a mapped drive in your PC. So you can access this hard drive via My PC as a regular network drive. You only need to drag content to the respective folder. Easy. But wait: when I start copying data (mkv videos) the transfer start at 31MB/s and after 20 seconds, the speed drops to 9MB/s. There is lot of forums out there where users complains about this issue and there is no way to address it. I test lot of options: wifi, ethernet, gigabit connection and always the same happens. I'm IT admin so I play with lot of options in the network scenario and found out if I change the jumbo gigabit packets in my network card from 4096 to disabled ot other size, the speed is back to 31MB/s but after 20 seconds! pum! again, speed drops. This is definitive a bug in the WD firmware or device jumbo packet management, I don't know.
Anyway, a very good product.
Copying your media onto the device is as simple as mounting this device's hard drive to your PC on the same network like a NAS so that it shows up for example as your Z: drive on Windows. On a mac you can mount it as smb://WDTVLiveHub too. You can write files to it at about 14MBytes/sec over a gigabit LAN and read files from it at half that rate. Or you can directly plug in a USB hard drive with the desired media files already on it. It has the ability to sync a local folder with a windows share on your network automatically if you want or do the same with a USB drive you attach. It can act as a DLNA Media server for your network too, serving up the files stored on its hard drive.
You could use it at home exclusively, or because it can store so much content, it seems to be ideal as a mobile video source for kids to plug into a monitor and watch on a road trip or even late night on a boat. It runs on 12VDC so it might be possible to make a custom cord to run it from a cigarette lighter plug for example instead of needing an inverter. I bought two of them so that one could be dedicated to this purpose while one stays home. Only thing I've noticed is that after setting up the second one to automatically copy its media library from the first device over a wired gigabit LAN it takes substantially longer than when I copied the files from a computer to the first unit.
A lot of flexibility and it seems to be quality-constructed with every possible output ranging from composite to component to HDMI video and from RCA to optical S/PDIF Toslink audio.
The unit is a little sketchy. It freezes up frequently and requires reseting. Changing agreements with content providers mean they could be here today and gone tomorrow (like Blockbuster, which was here yesterday but gone today). But WD does provide frequent firmware updates and since this is by definition a networked device, updating is easy. Even if an update goes badly (as happened to me) you can download previous firmwares and update via USB drive.
Note: This unit does not have wifi. If you don't want to run a cable, I recommend the Airlink101 AWLL5077 Golden 150Mbps Wireless Mini USB Adapter. It works amazingly well with our unit.
At the time of this review that market for these devices is still developing and there are a lot of different approaches out there. We feel that this is the most elegant solution for streaming our stored movies as well as internet content.
