Winston Rodney, a.k.a. Burning Spear, has been making highly political and personal reggae music since the early 1970s. Noted as one of the very first artists to make overtly Rastafarian/Marcus Garvey-centric music, Rodney is an elder statesman of the music. This live album starts with one of his earliest hits, "Pick Up the Pieces," and the rock-steady rhythms and lovingly punctuated horn riffs are remarkably fresh. Likewise, the two tunes from Burning Spear's breakthrough 1975 album, Marcus Garvey--"Old Marcus" and "Slavery Days"--are as magnificently intense and uplifting as ever. The only drawbacks are an occasional '80s-cheesy keyboard run and a few too many rock guitar licks. A spoken-word cover of "Oh Happy Day" reveals one of the music's unspoken influences, gospel music, while the majority of the disc rarely strays from a levitational, tranced-out, riff-heavy mix of flawlessly executed reggae and dub. --Mike McGonigal

Simply put: Burning Spear is the best reggae act currently touring the world.
Even if you're not a reggae fan, but enoy "real" live music, you'll groove on this band. I've taken non-regular reggae fans to see buring spear, and they still talk about the experience. This album very accurately captures the feel without actually being there in person.
Other recommended albums:
Live in Paris
Love and Peace (Live)
(a) Live - No US releases. Can purchase from Europe.

Winston Rodney, AKA... Burning Spear. His music is always unique, natural and pure roots rock reggae. Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2001, is second to Live in Zenith Paris. But I have always said; don't take my word, just listen to the music yourself and be your own judge. You will love it.

"Montreaux" was on a best-live-cd list a few years ago. The reviewer's comments seemed to be unrealistically high praise. Dude ranked this recording up in rarefied air (read short-list shows like Allman Brothers @ Fillmore East, GD @ Barton Hall, etc.).

I've been to Burning Spear shows and have much respect, but "Fillmore East & Cornell...?" It got wish-listed for a long time and arrived 2 days ago.

Montreaux clearly demonstrates what a live performance can be. Burning Spear is an embodiment of his belief system. The energy and joy that he throws down are like a warm beacon to all who listen. The crowd is frenzied. This is intense Roots Rasta Spirituality, with incredible riddims, horns, vocals... many layers; perfectly executed; Oneness recorded (well).

I now understand why this was on that best list; it deserves that air. Here is a sharing of authentic music and flow that come from the deepest, best places... I-nspirational!

If you're a fan and have been to a Burning Spear concert, you've experienced the moving Reggae rhythums and Winston's passion toward spreading his message. This CD brings one back to the concert hall like no other "live" album has done in my opinion.
