Review

"Modern clubbers will be surprised to hear vocals, horns, strings, rough-cut segues--and miles more funky soul than most of the faceless, airbrushed trance that dominates today's dance scene." -- Will Hermes, Entertainment Weekly

"No self-respecting fan will want to be without these key cuts." -- Revolution

"The music Mr. Levan played at the Garage taught a generation of disc jockeys how to work a crowd." -- Jon Pareles, The New York Times

Live at the Paradise Garage is a historical testament to Levan's power and the times in which he spun. -- Bree Rolf, XLR8R Magazine

This live mix, captured in 1979 and one of only a handful in existence, is a warts-and-all document of a man at the peak of his powers. -- Kieran Wyatt, URB Magazine, July/August 2000

Those who heard Larry live knew it was NOT about the tightest beat mixing, it was all about the flow and energy of the crowd and the message in the music, something that 95% of today's DJ's have forgotten. This truly takes you back in time to the late 70's, in New York, in a VERY mixed club crowd, in one of the best nightclubs ever to grace us and transforms you from merely listening to the music to being a part of it. If you want a greatest hits package, this ain't it! But if you want to hear what it was REALLY like, not just the Top 40 hits, you will not find a better package than this. Househeads will truly enjoy this, they get it!

meaning, this is brilliant. when I think of this era, I want to think of music mixe this top notch, not the crap you hear too frequently, like time life this is disco, lol. Brilliant mixing, great choice of cuts, to not see this as a classic you are missing the point, or trying to make the music what it is not. Thank you mr. Levan for leaving a legacy so true behind for people like me to stumble on and gain respect for an era of dance I've tried to look past, me the electro-guy, it started with disco and soul I know, but it's always hard to find stuff that I can connect with, you know get my teeth into.

Words can't describe the Live PARADISE Garage CD. I heard it at a friend's home and it took me back; way back to a time when life was carefree and the clubs, and OH, my my my, to be seen at the club (the right club), was all that mattered.
This music enhanced every moment of period long gone; but never, ever forgotten. I'm so glad I found it.
This CD is a must for any disco/club music collector.

This is a great album for Larry Levan fans or just those wanting to hear the mixing skills and music taste of one of the most influential deejays of dance music - from disco to garage to house and beyond.

The mixes may not be as 100% beat perfect as you would get on a CD mixed by one of today's' deejays, but remember that this is a live set with the minor flaws adding to the authenticity and charm. No studio software creation of perfect (and sometimes bland) mixes here. To my mind - and unlike the Studio 54 style - Larry never seemed to pick tracks purely on their "mixability" but rather selected his tracks on musical merit and then did a good job mixing them anyway.

I particularly like his very subtle use of two copies of Stephanie Mills "Put Your Body In It" where Larry starts the record not at it's rather cold intro but at much later vibey break and then continually mixes the same break over and over (if you listen at around 54 seconds and 1 minute 10 seconds and 1 minute 30 seconds into this track you can just pick this).

It's easy to see how he was such an influence on the current house style of sampling and repeating key elements of classic disco tracks. Check out the end of Trinidad by John Gibbs and the U.S. Steel Band where Larry first cuts in My First Mistake by The Chilites. Definitely the inspiration for "Needin U" as released by another Paradise Garage stalwart, David Morales!

This is an astounding set, all the more impressive when you realize it was recorded in 1979 and a piece of history well worth owning.

Buy it now and play it loud!

Well - if you clicked here to get more info on this Larry Levan live at the Paradise Garage CD, you probably know who the man is and you are most likely also aware of his importance in the development of the DJing culture/business.
Being a DJ myself, and after having heard/read all the hype about Levan, I felt I simply had to buy this CD and listen to it.
In no way whatsoever do I want to play Levan's achievements down; the praise he got from the likes of François K(evorkian) is enough to convince me of his importance. However, if today a DJ released a mix CD with the kind of mixes you'll hear here (the beats not always in sync, two songs "clashing" while being mixed, etc.) - people would simply say he's no good and that he's not made his homework; which is to learn the "basic skills" (one of them being seamless beat matching).
So if you expect mind-blowing mixes and little turntablism tricks here and there - don't even consider buying this CD.
If, on the other hand, you are interested in DJing history or you love Disco music - then this CD is a must. Probably the best Disco "mix compilation" around. (And I mean Disco - no boomboomboomboom-4-to-the-floor House or Techno...)

This is a true representation of Larry Levan on a classic Friday or Saturday night at the "G" as patron affectionately called one the best clubs in New York history - the Paradise Garage. Anyone who wants some foreplay into a disco orgasm should pick this up. Bougie Bougie alone, should get you off in true Paradise Garage form. Long Live the G!
