Amanda Kloots bravely reflects on love, loss, and life with her husband, Broadway star, and Tony Award nominee Nick Cordero, whose public battle with COVID-19 and tragic death made headlines around the world.
In March 2020, Broadway star and Tony Award nominee Nick Cordero was hospitalized for what he and his wife, Amanda Kloots, believed to be a severe case of pneumonia. Entering the hospital, they had every reason to believe that Nick—a young father and otherwise healthy man—would return home. After an eventual diagnosis of COVID-19 that led to Nick’s being placed on a ventilator, Amanda took to documenting their journey on social media, showing the dangers COVID-19 posed to everyone, regardless of age. Her updates quickly captivated millions, inspiring people around the globe to dance each day to Nick’s song “Live Your Life” and offer positive thoughts and prayer. When he passed away after ninety-five grueling days in the ICU, the world grieved for Amanda, her infant son, Elvis, and the future COVID-19 had snatched away from them.
Live Your Life is the story of Nick and Amanda’s life together—of their beautiful relationship, of Nick’s dramatic fight for survival, of those sudden tragic months that permanently changed her world and ours—and of their interrupted future as a family. From the confusing early days of his illness to searching for signs of hope in every update from the doctors to the healing sound of Elvis’s laughter, Amanda details how she approached even the most devastating moments with the personal optimism and faith that have shaped her life. Written with her sister Anna Kloots, who was with her every step of this journey, Live Your Life explores how Amanda’s willingness to accept help from an entire community of people—friends, family, and even total strangers—played a vital role in enduring this hardship. In the process, she offers a touching meditation on how even the worst times have silver linings that deepen our connections to the world around us and to the people who matter most. What emerges is an inspiring and unexpectedly uplifting message for life in the time of COVID, a vision of courage for anyone coping with overwhelming loss or the collective trauma of what the pandemic has taken from us. A poignant reflection on love, hope, motherhood, and the transformational power of music, Live Your Life is a love letter to Nick and a reminder that, sometimes, celebrating life today is the only path through tomorrow’s darkness.

“[Kloots] writes of their romance, careers and dreams, and the grief that comes with the quiet… a ticktock of her husband’s plight, her search for hope for herself and their son, Elvis, who turns 2 this month, and new details that will surprise even the most avid watchers of her Insta-stories." — New York Times

But, I wasn't triggered, and I found myself buoyed by Amanda's positivity, her fight for her husband's health, and the community she built in Laurel Canyon, Ca., and beyond. The whole world rallied for her husband, Nick, a seemingly healthy Broadway star, who fell victim to covid at the beginning of lock down.
Nick had no prior health problems and no one really knows how he got it. As his family, Amanda, and their son, Elvis, tried to settle into California from New York City, they stayed at friend Zach Braff's guest house and Nick couldn't keep his eyes open. Chalking it up to moving, no one thought anything of it. But when it became apparent he was sleeping more than he was awake, Amanda dropped him off at Cedars-Sinai emergency room. She didn't realize that would the last time she saw him before they put him on a ventilator and he fell into a deep coma.
While the events of Nick and Amanda's next few months unfold, Amanda's unwavering support, and the help of her family, is truly a testimony to the vows "in sickness and health." I was looking for a good book to read, and I had dozens to choose from, but something in my mind drew me to Live Your Life.
It's tragic, yes, and it sheds a big light on the virus and everlasting pandemic — but it also shows the power of positivity, family, love, singing, communities rallying together and a world trying to stop the ugly events of 2020 and on.
Amanda went on to get a job as a cohost on The Talk, and danced on Dancing With the Stars. You could say an angel is watching down on her. 😇
It is horrible that visitor access was restricted during Covid, especially since it's proven that having family/loving partner by a patient's side--even if in coma state--do better emotionally and physically and can recover faster, in most circumstances.
Really well-written, organized narrative and story-arc, which I was skeptical of this book conveying since I studied narrative non-fiction in my master's writing program. But I'm sure the quality of this book was because of the collaborative writing/editing by the authors and the publisher's editing team. Which is the process for all good books.
In preordering this book, I planned to read it in one sitting once I received the package. But, instead, it took me five days to finish the book. Stretching this book out longer was simply because of Amanda’s positivity.
While I knew the outcome of Nick’s long battle with Covid complications, I think I kept reading with the same hope that I had back in April that Nick would wake up and go home to be with Amanda and Elvis. Throughout the pages of this book you can feel Amanda’s positivity radiate off every word. Even with knowing what the end would be, I still held out hope for a different ending. That’s what Amanda does. She keeps you looking at the bright side of the road.
Don’t think that this book will have you feeling depressed. Read this book when you need reminding on how wonderful life can be and how everything has a purpose. Amanda reminds us that while Nick’s death may seem like an unhappy ending, all the events that occurred throughout allowed for friends and family to be together, Nick’s dreams to come true, and for the world to heal through positivity.
Nick’s original song, “Live Your Life,” helped to remind the whole world to do just that.
