Editorial Reviews

Double CD re-issue on JIM O'ROURKE's Moikai label for "lost" free jazz album from British guitarist who in the English free jazz improvisation scene of the late 60's & early 70's was reputed to be the first guitarist to have a pedal set up & was responsible for the guitar freak out on the James Bond "Dr. No" soundtrack! For a period in the early 70's he made records of rock & free jazz energy. His sound is recognizably jazz, the rhythm section, the horns & group improvisation but even after all this time it's still a shock when he hits the strings! Explosive, sharp angular bursts of "skree" guitar rather like a Pollack painting fitted with guitar pickups! Like contemporaries Sonny Sharrock & Terje Rypdal he makes it sound as if the guitar is not enough, as if he's reaching for something wilder.. something that can't be contained within the 6 string cage! Features the original artwork with additional liner notes from Alan Licht & Ray Russell himself.. Check out recent RCA reissues also.

Jim O'Rourke could do no wrong with this amazing reissue of a long almost forgotten about guitarist. Having the raw power of Jimi Hendrix along with the improvising willfulness of Derek Bailey, he cranked out some unbelievable free music from the late 60's to the late 70's (in the 80's he was in a pretty cheesy, mediocre at best group called "RMS"). This music is challenging even by today's standards of rock and jazz. Heavily influential on many of today's avant guitarists such as Thurston Moore (Moore/Winant/Surgal trio), Stefan Jaworzyn (Ascension), Alan Licht (Run-On, Mazzacane-Connors...etc.) & Rudolph Grey (Blue Humans).

The great news is that Ray is in the company of such greats as Harry Beckett and Gary Windo in most of the sessions included here. Beckett specially is in great form blowing excellent solos. The music is mostly free though there are tiny parts where they actually 'swing'. Of all i have heard from Ray this is probably his best.

What a treat it has been to get this music. I will definitely be exploring more of his output. Extremely enjoyable as well as challenging.
This music cannot be ignored.
