Editorial Reviews

The heavy psychedelic trio Earthless was featured at the annual Roadburn Festival in Holland - a celebration of tube-driven distortion, crackling electric guitars, and the many fans who come to celebrate the mighty riff. Earthless embodies the event's essence, and this year, they wound up on the main stage in front of 2,000 fans, filling the time slot of the headlining band with a 90 minute visual mind and audio massacre. Told of the recordings, the band decided it was the most honest document they could offer; caught in their natural environment: the live show. The result is a double LP and CD masterpiece.

I buy a lot of music that is characterized as psychedelic, Sabbathesque, dark, heavy, twisted, stoner, transcendent, unparalleled, riff-heavy, mind-blowing, and etc. I pretty much fall prey to those adjectives, because that's the style of music I like. So, I buy these CDs or the vinyl and wait to see what I get. Most of the time what I get is.....just okay. Usually its a weak attempt to sound like Sabbath, with dark and dreary riffs and mystical mournful vocals.

Earthless, however is nothing like the rest. I have all of their albums (only 3, unfortunately) and this Roadburn is definitely their best. No vocals here--just instrumental. Twisted guitars galore, heavy, heavy, heavy. I love this music. This is a downright scary psychedelic odyssey here, folks. That sinister guitar just keeps hammering away at your sanity. I listened to it yesterday as I was taking a nap on my old leather chair and I started having dreams which would have converted Aleister Crowley into a church-going Methodist or Lovecraft into a Jehovah's Witness. This music lives...it's a pulsating, vaporous mass of sonic malevolence--but in a good way!! I want to be its friend!! Please don't hurt me, heavy sonic onslaught!!

Sorry, I digressed. Bottom-line: these guys deliver the goods. This is what you've been looking for. Really heavy, dark, intense, wonderful music. Buy this, then all their other albums, all their posters by some great artists who dig this kind of music, and then wait for their next album to be released. And, ultimately, everybody has got to see one of their shows because the only thing better than having this Roadburn CD would have been to have seen the show live.

Can you remember the jam in the middle of "The working man"? Can you recall the never ending jams of the live Ted Nugent? Can you imagine Black Sabbath just jamming without Ozzie? Well, that's what this album is all about. First disc starts with non-stop fire for about 30 minutes. When you begin to fall in love with this guys' music, all of a sudden they get into a never ending repetitive pattern for the rest of the 17 minutes left. Boring...I thought "this crap is just spoiling the first 30 minutes", first disc finishes and what comes to my mind is "this last 17 minutes are unforgivable, I thought this guys were really good"...then disc two starts with some feedback. Three minutes later I have forgiven this musicians and want to adopt them and write a book about the second disc. Awesome!! This guys rule, this is superhot. I don't remember nothing like this since looooooong ago. In the end, I couldn't forgive those 17 repetitive minutes, but the rest of the 65 minutes of music was five stars plus...if only the dammned 17 didn't belong here, it would have been my rate for them.

wow, these guys rock. seriously rock. i love power trios and am always on the lookout for some good releases. this is it. take the best of early Guru Guru, Hendrix, Cream and you might have something like Earthless. a live recording with some incredible, stretched out jams. this live set is an absolute treat to listen to. no singing, all instrumental, and what a set they perform. i bought this on a whim and am delighted at what this band has to offer. i've not heard their studio material, but if anything like this live release, they are truly gods!

I thought their 2 studio albums were great (they are) but OH MY GOD!
This one is truly incredible. These guys create a symphony in cranking rock intrumentals. Isaiah Mitchell is one unbelievable guitarist! Earthless leave bands like the Ozric Tentacles (another one of my favorites) in their dust. If could give this 6 stars I would! WOW!

This is genuine guitar-rock like it should be, straight from the heart, honnest and heavy. Although the guitar remains dominant, the rhythm section is tight and goes like a train - amazing: Jimi Hendrix meets Hawkwind..

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 titres captivants !
