I read with tears streaming down my cheeks.
This is a story of unimaginable resilience and strength. It is beautifully written in a way that had me feeling I was there at every step.
This is a masterful piece of work.
I highly recommend it.
This non-fiction narrative is the exact opposite - focusing on harsh reality. It just proves what a talented author she is.
With Alice, the author has created a remarkable story that is a page turner about the impact of war on individual lives. So many books about war are about the big picture facts. All very important for us to know about, but it is the effect on the individual that reaches to our inner core. In this story we feel for Alice on every page, we walk alongside her through all her trials and tribulations, we get to know and understand her and we want to know how she survives.
This book has since been read by my husband and son and they both loved it. My husband is a history buff. He thought the author had captured the feel and the times very well. Whilst the characters were naive and foolish to think they could or should stay in France at that time, it serves to show how little the people in the streets knew what was happening. My son enjoyed the fact that is was written about an ordinary woman in a small town, and not about a soldier as as so many war stories are.
Perfectly captured, a great book. Highly recommended.
Horror of family life during occupation. Resistance against invaders and parallel life of family trying not only to survive but also to protect self respect and human dignity during war time . It made me come back to my family own history to Poland - country with strong cultural , artistic and sentimental connection to France
Jenny Harrison gives us excellent description of the time, climate , atmosphere, taste, smell all attribute of broad social perspective of these days reality . It is so vivid as I am watching album with photographs of my young parents citizens of Europe before and during Natzi occupation 70 years ago. For me this book has a special values as my Polish family gone through the same terrible stages. Father in army and later in resistance , mother alone with 2 children
Description of the circumstances in the beginning of war when France didn't fulfil its military agreements named "sitting war" . Description of political arena, Annextion of Austria, taken Czechoslovakia, invasion of Poland and Russia. All stages of preparation , explosion and escalation of the war machine. Shame for all nation; Vichy government collaborating with Hitler with Marshal Petain, resurrection with Marshal De Gaul, but above all this is book of the priority of life values , human values , family, mothering and ethical values . Alice and her husband Emile are such people. Safety of their daughter Evelyne it the priority for them. Her human natural needs above cruel absurd war machinery. This is very optimistic perfectly written book. Small chapter with very accurate motto in the beginning makes the book very friendly lecture , easy to enjoy and remember.
