Living Cookbook makes it easy to enter your recipes. You can type them in, scan them (using the OCR software that came with your scanner) or copy them from the Internet. The software also makes it easy to transfer your recipe collection from other recipe management programs such as MasterCook, Cook'n, Meal-Master and BigOven.
You can publish your own cookbook complete with table of contents, pagination and index. You can preview and print your cookbook directly from Living Cookbook or export it as a Microsoft Word (DOCX) document for additional editing.
The meal planning calendar lets you drag and drop your recipes onto the calendar. You can view your meal plans by day, week or month. Creating a shopping list for a meal plan is as simple as clicking on the appropriate days and selecting "Add to Grocery List" from the Action menu.

My conclusion is that you need both programs. MasterCook has more recipes and better techniques (even short videos). But if you're going to compile your own recipes or modify others, Living Cookbook 2011 is far more powerful and much more coherent and useful a program. In MasterCook, everything is centered around the recipe and things like ingredients, the pantry, and the shopping list seem tacked on, kinda shoehorned into the program. In Living Cookbook, ingredients and inventory items are full-fledged citizens in the program that you can easily search on, update, and work with. The MasterCook interface in spite of its limitations is a bit more attractive to work with. With Living Cookbook, it sometimes feels like you're working with a spreadsheet but you soon get used to the compactness and utility of the interface. With MasterCook, I often found myself searching the Internet for workarounds to overcome limitations of the program that haven't been addressed in years. For me, a particularly annoying thing in MasterCook is that categorization of recipes can only be done on a cookbook-by-cookbook basis, and the categories available in the numerous cookbooks that come with the program aren't even the same from cookbook to cookbook. If you use a category in one cookbook, you'll have to remember what it is and tediously reapply it individually in every other cookbook that you want to use it in. In Living Cookbook, categories are program-wide and once created can be reused anywhere.
Both MasterCook and Living Cookbook can be used with the FireFox browser recipe capture utility RecipeFox. But the capture utility built into Living Cookbook works very well just with copy and paste from the web. I have had no trouble exporting recipes out of MasterCook and into Living Cookbook. Some care has to be taken with the automatic ingredient linking in Living Cookbook and if you change any ingredient, you may need to deliberately reset and recalculate nutritional information for a recipe.
So my recommendation is get both Mastercook and Living Cookbook. You'll want Mastercook for the recipes if you're not relying solely on the Internet. And you'll want Living Cookbook for the greater facility it provides to work with, modify recipes, ingredients, shopping lists, and manage all the information that you accumulate as a cook. Mastercook v9 can be had for $6 and Living Cookbook 2011 is about $35. You get what you pay for, at least in this case! Give the 30-day free trial a spin, available on the Radium Technologies web site.
P.S. The ability to calendar your diet both in terms of off-the-shelf stuff you eat and recipes you cook is quite good in Living Cookbook. IMHO, it's worth the price alone for monitoring your nutrition and diet.
Pros: It is very easy to import recipes, including pictures/images, from the web into LC. Color coding the text you have moved is a nice feature. The recipe organizer is also easy to use; you can sort by recipe, category, source, etc. by clicking the heading of the column. Entry of recipe information is pretty straight forward, except "Procedure" (directions) information disappears after you have entered more that one line of text. You need to hit enter before it reappears.
Cons: If you are interested in the nutrition information of your recipes, this may not be the software for you. You will need to check every ingredient in your recipe to review the ingredient LC chose for your entry and the unit used (cup, tsp., etc.), especially the first time you enter the ingredient. For example, LC chose baby food for my baby spinach entry and cheddar cheese soup for grated cheddar cheese. It does not recognize sea scallops--you have to know that they are mollusks to search for scallops in the ingredient list. A packaged commercial product is usually selected by LC rather than a raw or whole product. It appears that LC developers simply imported nutrition info. and didn't bother to put it into ingredient names and units used in most cookbooks and by most cooks. Units are based on 100 grams.
Also, it is a twelve step process to print a recipe on an Avery 3x5 index card (per instructions received from LC customer service). Speaking of customer service, it took almost two weeks to get an answer to my question about printing on 3x5 cards, and another question has never been answered.
If you hope to import your MasterCook recipes and cookbooks into Living Cookbook, you should know that you can not import MasterCook recipes created in a version earlier that MasterCook7.
My Microsoft Office 2010 allows me to activate the laptop. My Adobe Design Suite allows me to activate the laptop. MY EVERYTHING ELSE allows me to activate the laptop. Yet my Living Cookbook 2011 DOES NOT. It is really too bad. The program could have earned 5 Stars if they would have treated me LIKE EVERY OTHER SOFTWARE COMPANY OUT THERE!! Its competitor Mastercook will install and work on a second computer without problems.
