Editorial Reviews

"Omnivorously researched, Garrett's book includes references to Cormac McCarthy, Dawn of the Dead and its remake, Game of Thrones, and the New Testament, among others. Zombies, it seems, are everywhere, and the "zombie apocalypse" narrative is the perfect metaphor for life as we know it today: transitioning "from one state to the other, a movement so shocking that we often stand ... mouths wide open, simultaneously marveling and horrified at the changes taking place." Garrett's writing is as mesmerizing, and as he fleshes out his case, drawing new connections, Living With The Living Dead becomes impossible to put down. With a voracious appetite for pop culture, Garrett establishes himself as a bold new voice in the nonfiction genre."Claire Foster, Foreword Reviews

"Greg Garrett approaches this subject with great insight, intelligence, and sensitivity. The result is a well-researched but highly personal book that makes you feel like you're having a captivating philosophical discussion about life with a very wise and learned friend. Despite--or because of--its subject matter, it's a very human book."Mark Protosevich, screenwriter of
I Am Legend

"Erudite and absorbing. . . . More than just a survival guide, this book considers the literary, cinematic and theological history of the zombie -- the vast popularity of the genre, and the extraordinary range of meanings and anxieties that zombies have incarnated over the years."Sam Leith,
The Spectator

From the Author

I wrote Living with the Living Dead because I found that there was so much more to say about the wave of undead than I could possibly fit into my study of stories of the afterlife, Entertaining Judgment. I'm always trying to figure out why certain stories have cultural currency and what they have to teach us, and this book is no exception. The narrative of the Zombie Apocalypse is one of the most popular stories in the post 9/11 world, and I simply wanted to understand why. So I began exploring movies, television, games, and cultural events like zombie runs (and zombie pub crawls), but in the process, I also began finding historical examples of the dead walking (or Death walking) in times when human beings have faced similar multiple threats, and I began to understand that there's nothing strange or even faintly ridiculous about our attraction to zombies. They remind us of mortality, that death seems to be around the corner from a variety of threats these days. But they also remind us about what it means to be human, to be alive. It's no wonder that the back cover of the trade paperbacks of The Walking Dead comic tell us that in a world where the dead walk, it's time for us to finally start living. I learned a lot about life in the process of writing this book about the living dead, and zombie lover or zombie hater, I think you might find a lot to think over here too.
