This book is for you if your dog has been recently diagnosed with diabetes, has unusual behavior, or if your dog is suspected to be diabetic!
My precious dog began to show serious 'symptoms' of old age on the Friday before Christmas, 2012. She became weak, and upon closer inspection, she showed signs of losing her bodily functions. I rushed her to the veterinarians' offices where they 'worked her into' their busy, harried holiday schedule. Tests were run, x-rays were taken, all on a Friday afternoon.
It was Friday, before Monday, which was Christmas Eve, and her tests results were given to me via phone call in the evening. "Your dog is diabetic, so please bring her in on Wednesday after she has fasted all night for further testing". What? I had to wait until Monday for more tests? Yes, ..... Fear gripped my guts as I feared all of the bad things this prognosis could bring. What was about to happen to my world? How could I possibly care for a diabetic dog? Christmas looked bleak and scary! How could I endure the 'wait'?
I immediately got on Amazon and found this book! I ordered it immediately late on Friday afternoon!! On Wednesday, the book arrived!! It was the morning my dog was taken into the veterinarians' office for more tests!Read more ›
Within the first few pages I realized this book is essential reading for all dog owners, diabetic or not.
Any dog can develop diabetes and the symptoms taken singly don't raise any alarms, but taken together point clearly to diabetes. Ms Newton Thomas does a very good job in clearly flagging the warning signs as well as giving detailed information on care for a diabetic dog.
Her writing is very clear and easy to read, in fact it is written from a very personal point of view as her own dog Willie suffered from diabetes.
Aside from the wisdom of knowing the symptoms beforehand, she writes an extremely helpful section of questions to ask a vet if your dog is diabetic. It will make all the difference to your dogs care and your peace of mind.
This is a book that I would highly recommend all dog owners read.
This book is written by someone who has obviously gone through the emotional ups and downs of having a dog with diabetes. It's a great guide for all dog owners, whether their dog has diabetes or not. After reading the chapter on injections, I realize that I have been doing it incorrectly. Very great tips there.
