According to Mr. Craig, there are many reasons we don’t achieve the results we are hoping for.
One major reason is we are pursuing the wrong goal. We often are seeking success when we should be pursuing significance.
Another major reason is we are seeking to change things in our external world rather than first focusing on our internal world.
In Living the Hero’s Journey, Mr. Craig approaches the subject from a totally different and unique perspective.
The book is based on the framework outlined in Joseph Campbell’s classic work Hero’s Journey. This framework has become the standard structure for developing plots in books and movies.
The plot line goes like this: 1) Heroes are introduced in the ordinary world 2) They receive a call to adventure (right a wrong/solve a problem) 3) At first they refuse the call 4) Are encouraged by a mentor 5) Cross the threshold 6) Encounter trials and tribulations 7) Meet the enemy 8) Win the battle and take the reward 9) Return to the ordinary world with the prize and help their fellow man.
The author goes into detail explaining how we all have the opportunity to embark on a Hero’s Journey. The concept of the Hero’s Journey is explained using ancient stories, well known movies and popular books. While I have been exposed to this teaching before, I’ve never encountered it in such depth.
It’s very interesting to learn about the literary framework for so many stories/movies we are all familiar with – Star Wars, Cinderella, Raiders of the Lost Ark and countless others. But what makes this important is how this framework can be used to create our own Hero’s Journey. We can follow the template to become the star in our own journey.
As Mr. Craig summarizes, our goal should not be success but significance. We should strive for “A life well lived.” We need to allow our “Life’s work to be our legacy.”
If we follow the guidelines set forth in the book, we will do the inner work necessary to create our own Hero’s Journey.
As you will discover, Mr. Craig does not write from a theoretical perspective. In fact, writing the book was a tool to help him on his own Hero’s Journey. He is sharing the steps and thought process he went through to find his purpose and creating meaning in his own life.
The book is filled with insights and wisdom. A valuable read.
I was provided a review copy of this book.
My copy is filled with highlights, the sign of a book that I know I'll refer back to. I think the best I can do to help convey the significance of this book is to share some of my favorite highlights. I read it cover to cover in about 2 weeks.
Some notable highlights:
★ Our Journey... ★
• A story that keeps our interest is one we can't anticipate. The treasure lies in the unknown.
• Life is not designed for ease, it's designed for meaning.
• Understanding our place in the world gets us halfway to making the world a better place.
• It's the result of aiming at something beyond mere adaptation and survival.
• "No vision would be required, no dream would be needed, and no one's soul would be truly tested."
• "If we cannot find joy in the journey, there will be no delight in the destination" ~ Will Craig
• "Life is like arriving late to a movie, having to figure out what is going on without bothering everyone with a lot of questions, and then being unexpectedly called away before you find out how it ends."
★ Teaching and Mentors ★
• "We teach best what we most need to learn." ~ Richard Bach
• It is said that the best teachers are those who have just learned what you need to know.
• Become the apprentice of your best life.
• "When the hero is ready, the mentor appears."
• There's a difference between knowing the path and walking it.
• A willingness to trade immediate gratification for lasting courage and heroism.
• Getting knocked down reveals you're human, getting back up reveals your character.
★ Ambition, change, and entitlement ★
• We have the opportunity to improve our lives incrementally one day at a time.
• Our unwillingness to change (or accommodate change), keeps us stuck, and we repeat the lesson. We have to renew or redo.
• Reflection allows us to see the significance of the lessons learned.
★ Decisions, Fate, and Reflection ★
• What you say to yourself really does matter (it's our internal programming).
• Our lives are the culmination of every thought we've had.
• Our values, principles and boundaries will be forever getting tested.
• Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom (Aristotle).
I'm sure you'll find more gold as well!
